#1547, "9 Month Olds and Morning Wake up"

Hello ladies.. My 9mth olds are on two, hour and fifteen minute long naps a day (this has been their nap length since forever). Since the two nap change we have started putting them down for sleep at night around 6:45 so they are asleep by 7. We used to wake up at 6:30 which I thought was early but now, since the schedule change we ...are waking up at 5:30 This morning I let them CIO (it was AWFUL) until 6 because I just think 5:30 is WAAAY too early to start our day. They don't take binkies and mobiles are no help. I don't think they can stay up later at night either because they are awake but on the verge of sleep when we lay them down at night... if I let them CIO until 6am do you think they will eventually learn to sleep longer...??

Wow -- great job on the sleep, nap and night!

My GGG were also early wakers for a while however, at that age (7 months adjusted), we were still doing feeds when they woke up. So if they woke before 6am, we would feed them all and put them back to bed -- of course this started that they would wake at 3am then 4am then 5am etc. as they extended their night sleep. We were consistent about putting them back to bed after an early morning feed. If they woke up after 6am, that was a call I needed to make - do I let them cry and coo for bit or not. Eventually I made an arbitrary time of 6:45am that I would go and get them up.

Over time, they gradually evolved to waking between 6:45 and 7:30am. Our bedtime was also early - 6:30 pm. I found that if I got them to bed by this time consistently, they would sleep longer at night. Now they are a little older, we've bumped the bedtime to 7pm and wake up remains between 7-7:30.

So....that's a long-winded way of wondering if they might be hungry when they wake up so early? If you don't think so, I would pick a time that you are okay with getting them up and let them CIO until then (which you're already doing!)....

good luck - I hope that helps a bit...

Of course I'm dealing with night feeding issues, but if my guys wake up before 6am we feed them and put them back to bed. If it's after 6am we just keep them up. My singleton is a late to bed/early to wake so she's normally waking up aroung 6:30 anyway.
