#188, "gas pain"

Hi Everyone!!

My 2 bigger girls have been sleeping 12 hours a night for several weeks now. In the last 2 weeks or so, Abbey is getting up 8-10 times a night with gas pain. I know it's gas pain because as soon as she burps or passes gas, she goes right back to sleep. My husband and I go in pat her back, give her the binky. She groans and crys in her sleep and with all the groaning and crying, she's starting to wake up the other 2. Any suggestion as to what could be causing all the gas and what we can do to help her get rid of it? She's already on Target Brand Sensative Formula. Thanks so much!!

have you tried gas drops? maybe with her formula or some before she goes to bed?

and can i say how envious i am that your babies are already sleeping 12 hours a night? it took my boys until 7 months!

Yeah - we've tried gas drops. We've tried 1 ml of Mylanta, Gas drops in the bottle, before the bottle, after the bottle, in every bottle. Nothing seems to help. I talked to the Ped. and he said to give her a suppository every night. That sounds crazy to me!

Is she going to the bathroom at least once every few days? When she goes is it really hard? If the problem is not constipation, I would look a trying a different formula and see if you can get any success. Is it every night or just occassionally? Have you recently started foods or rice cereal because that can confuse their little tummies. Sorry for all the questions just trying to think out loud.

Yes, she goes to the bathroom usually once a day. Not always. She's had problems with constipation since she was a few weeks old. It's almost always pretty solid. It isn't every night, she could go a few days totally fine (like last night)and then have problems for several days. I can't seem to find any pattern to it. Too much tummy time, not enough tummy time, not enough burping. I'm totally stumped. We did start cereal recently but, the ped said to do oatmeal since she's always had problems with constipation. She has the gas pains even if she has just gone to the bathroom an hour before. She's on sensative formula already. What other formula do you think might help? Thanks for thinking this through with me!

The next formula to try would be soy or nutramigen/alimentum. We had two on the nutramigen and one on the next level up from that...elecare/neocate. Nutramigen is also used by some Pedi's to help with constipation, so be ready for some loose stools.

I was waiting to post to see if anyone with more recent experience was going to take a stab at this...but here goes my 2 cents.

Try the nutramigen/allimentum. If improves during the 2 week trial then you have your answer, and you can try weaning her off of it in a few months.

The reason I say to wean her of is twofold...first, by your info I see your trio are at about the height of colic time (and colic is found at varying degrees...not just the baby who won't stop crying). Colic is a label used to describe a baby that cries for an unknown reason...these days we know that some of their pain is gut related and can be helped with different formulas or probiotics (which may people around here have had success with) or other remedies, sometimes though, Drs. still don't know why colic happens. The good news is...colic ends by the 5-6m time range...and by end, I mean it either up and stops one day, or it slowly and quietly gets a little better every week. (our most severe colic/refluxer got better over several months...now she is our easy child. All three of ours had reflux/colic some with worse reflux, some worse colic) The second reason I say this is because nutramigen/allimentum is expensive and can aggravate spitting up, loose stools, and stains horribly...if you can shift back to the sensitive formula once the colic eases, especially if it is the same formula that the other two are on...you will be much happier.

I hope your DD feels better soon.
