#2, "Spit up...When does it end?"

Hi,
One of my DD spits up CONSTANTLY! She has reflux and is taking prevacid, which really helps her discomfort. Also we feed all the babies every 4 hours right now, but to help her, we feed her less during those feeds and give her two other "snack" bottles to make sure she is getting the adequate amount of calories. We have changed to a thicker formula, but it didn't help and only made her constipated. She has gone to a GI specialist who calls her a "happy spitter."
I am just tired of cleaning spit up off of EVERYTHING and she goes through 3-5 bibs after every bottle, many outfits a day, etc, etc. When did your babies who spit up this much grow out of it. My other two seem to spit up a average amount.

Thanks!

Mine started spitting up much less when they started taking in more solids. Once their meals consisted of about 1/2 solids and 1/2 bottle, I noticed a big difference. All three of my boys were on Zantac and Reglan for reflux, and outgrew the need for meds around 10 months.

Hang in there, eventually it will stop!

I wish I had an answer for you. Our trio had reflux, 2 were on meds (Prevacid) but I stopped giving it to them after they hit about 14 wks. They still spit up like crazy but I have just succumbed to it. I know they will eventually grow out of it.

Mine are now 8.5 months. We still get the occasional spit up and its pretty bad when it does happen. Mostly b/c we aren't prepared for it but also b/c if it happens, it is a large amount.

sooooo frustrating!

2 of mine went thru a period where they projectiled everything out of their mouth and NOSE!

but for one I recently discovered it was what she was eating...

I had a fussy baby. 2 drs thought it was reflux. and gas. and fussiness. she spit up in the beginning, had a lot of mucus, ate very small portions of milk. I stopped formula and gave her only breast milk, she was a bit better. added rice cereal to the breast milk, even better. BUT just last week I mixed in Nutrimagen and she was so happy. Now I dropped the breast milk and rice cereal and she is doing great on just Nutramigen. It is expensive, but we'll have to find some freebies because she is mucus-free and I can even lay her on her back immediately after eating and she does not spit up. And she was eating 3-4 ounces at a time 2 weeks ago and now she sometimes has 9 oz. The other issue we had with her was her head was growing really fast. had head ultrasound and she did not have fluid on brain, thank God, but some fluid outside of brain. Now I see that she wasn't getting enough to eat, poor thing, and I'm guessing she's going to gain weight quickly now that she is eating so much more. Her body will catch up with her head!

don't know if this helped, but just a suggestion to play around with her food.

Thank you all for your replies. We have tried her on Enfamil AR and it didn't make things better for her. Also she was on exclusive BM for the first 3 months and still spit up as much. We started everyone one rice cereal a couple of days ago and she loves it so far! I hope as we start giving them more solids it will subside a bit.
I know mostly I will have to just wait it out and at least she is happy and not fussy anymore due to the prevacid. She will have to be a stinky and wet, but happy baby!
Thanks again!

Just saw the post. Our youngest was also a "happy spitter". He was on Zantac almost as soon as he started with bottle feeds in the NICU. We also added cereal (oatmeal primarily) to his bottles as well. He was on EBM until about 5 months then went over to NeoSure RTF formula. He was an equal opportunity spitter regardless of what he ate. We tried him on Reglan for about four days but stopped because he was absolutely cranky. We rather have the 'happy' baby that spits then the cranky baby that didn't. Then magically it stopped almost overnight when we started on solid foods at 6 months. We started with the cereal and then added in fruits and veggies. Whatever it was with the all liquid diet just didnt agree with him. We stopped the zantac at about 8 monthsd after talking with the pedi because it seemed unnecessary since he wasn't spitting-up. Our other two only spit up ocassionally but Samuel seemed to make up for it all. Hopefully you only have a few more weeks of it and starting solid foods solves the problem.
