#218, "Babies won't eat!!!!!!"

I need some advice. In the past 2 weeks, two of my little ones no longer seem interested in their bottles. They act as if they are not even hungry. They start their bottles and then decide they no longer want anything to do with it. They are not crying out in pain just sometimes frustratin because I try to continue to feed them usually. My boys used to eat 28-30oz a day and now I am lucky, I mean really lucky, if they get about 22-23oz. They seem to eat well only if they are asleep. My trio will be 6 months (born at 29w 6d)on the 18th. Is this happening or has it happened to anyone else. How did you handle it? I am just so worried they are not getting enough. My pedi says they are fine and growing well but this still scares me!!!!

If they are frustrated, it may be due to the nipple size being too small. You can try moving up a size and see what they do.

I'll have to give that a try. I had actually moved up a size about a month before this started but maybe it is time to go up again. It is definitely worth a shot. Thanks

My kids went through the same thing about a month or so ago. I could not get them to eat! I was so frustrated. They also were barely eating 22 oz. day. I'm not sure what the deal was but they did start eating again eventually. In fact, my son started drinking 8 oz. bottles out of nowhere. My dd's also suddenly started eating again around the same time (they still only drink 24-30 oz/day).

Maybe it is a phase... It lasted several weeks for us. I know that is not much help.

1 of my 3 do this! At his last feeding at 11am he only ate 3 of 6 oz. And it is very frusterating but he seems content, even smiling, and if I try to force him he cries. Sometimes if we take a five minute break and I stand him up and play with him and then go back to the bottle it works but not always. I posted a very similar post to the one you wrote about a month ago and people said it might be reflux or an oral adversion but we are doing fine just working thru it. Hopefully it will end soon.

Hopefully this is just a phase and it does not last much longer. I am so worried about them not gaining weight or even worse losing weight. I called the pedi and they said these things happen and to just get fluids in them the best I can.....even if it means when they are asleep. If it gets worse they want me to call in again but for now they want us to wait until next week to go in and we will check weights then. Two of my three are happy happy all the time but one of my boys is becoming quite cranky. He is the one being treated for reflux. I pray this ends soon because it is making me crazy. Thanks for sharing with me at least I know I am not alone.

My babies have only done this b/c of teething or an ear ache so I don't have much advice. I say if they are content, then let them be for now. Are you on a 3 or 4 hr feeding schedule?

They are on a four hour schedule. Two of them did much better yesterday.........not great but definitely better. One of my boys now cries if he even sees the botttle or he'll cry if I try to sit in the rocking chair where I always sit to feed them. The only way I was able to get him to eat yesterday and so far today is when he is asleep. Maybe it is teething. I am sure whatever it is will pass soon.......but I hope it is sooner than later. It just worries me so much.

My boys did the exact same thing right around 5 months old. They would eat about 1-2 oz. then turn their heads and refuse to eat. It was so frustrating and made our schedule really hard to keep. I would try to stand and feed, rock and feed, anything, but not much worked. Then it changed. About 3 weeks ago they just started to eat great - 6 oz. bottles and cereal. It must be some strange phase they go through. Hang on, hopefully it'll change soon!

I don't think U need to worry. I'm going through the same thing with my kids and it turned out they're teething. Sometimes if they are very irritable I give them some Tyl. and it helps a lot. They eat and sleep better. If they are gaining weight then they should be fine. Also kids grow in spurts so maybe they are at a plateau and don't need as much nutrition.

Thanks so much to everyone who posted here - I am going crazy with one of mine who is taking less than 12 oz of formula - before was 20 - 28. She's eating pretty well and smiling, so maybe I'll do the same (eat and smile - LOL) - instead of standing on my head and acting a fool.
