We plan to start the babies on cereal in about 2 weeks.
I know many people start on rice, but that most babies don't really like it and it doesn't have anything nutritious in it.
Did anyone just start on baby oatmeal...is there such a thing or do you make regular oatmeal? TIA!

yes, we started on baby oatmeal. Gerber makes it. We did that instead of rice because our girls had issues with constipation and the Ped recommended going right to oatmeal. Good luck!!

You can start w/ either. My babies LOVE oatmeal, especially w/ fruits.

Mine aren't big fans of rice either. I mix about half rice and half oatmeal and they like it.

We started on rice because it is supposed to be the least allergic one. Very few kids have a reaction to the other cereals but mine did. Two of my kids had a reaction to oatmeal. We stopped giving it to them and tried again a few months later. It was ok the second time.

Thanks guys!

Lori...what are the symptoms if there is a reaction? How old were your babies when you first tried oatmeal?

Our son also could only eat the rice cereal. reactions for him were very LOOSE poops, hives around the mouth and VERY cranky! No one in our family has allergies, but he does. So you can try the oatmeal, but if your are nervous at all about allergic reactions start with the rice.

Thanks for the info! No one in our family has any allergies that I know of, but I will keep my eyes open.

My kids developed a rash on their face and neck. The funny thing is it took about a week to develop. We were told to try each new food for a week, but some people are told as little as 3 days. By the time the rash showed up we were just starting a new food. I actually wasn't sure if the rash was from oatmeal or sweet potatoes. I had to try oatmeal again a week later to make sure that is what the problem was. When they broke out again, I knew.
