#438, "Bedtime"

Hi Everyone,

HELP! I have a great bedtime routine with my 2 year old son and it took me a long to "get it" with him. He didn't sleep through the night until 10 months old when we finally let him cry it out. Now our routine so solide that almost anyone can put him down.

I am attempting to start early with my triplets so that they are sleeping better sooner.

We have been letting the triplets fall asleep in the swings and then carrying them to bed, but this simply doesn't seem like a good long term plan. It also is not helping with the chaos of the "witching hour" with a 2 year old. So I decided we needed to go to their room for a quiet time with their bottles before bed.

I know all the ideas for a great bedtime routine, but those are great for singletons. How do y'all do it with your three? I am attempting to take them all to their room and change into jammies, diaper, read a short book while they sit in their boppies and give bottles while we listen to a soothing CD. I Then rock each one for just a few minutes (this is more for me than them) and then put them down "sleepy awake". Sounds great, but I never get to really get through putting any one baby down without another baby crying. Sure enough, I think they are ready to be put down and I start working with another baby and he starts to cry. Two nights in a row now I have ended up with 3 crying babies and a mommy on the verge of tears. We have just started this routine so maybe it is just a matter of time.

How old are they? At 3-4 months we started letting them cry it out. I just did bath, bottle, bed. Let them cry every few minutes go rub their heads and whispered a few comforting words so they knew they were not abandoned but never picked them back up. It only took 2 nights of crying and now they hardly ever cry at bed time. They have to get use to each other crying. Now one of mine can be screaming their head off and it doesn't even phase the other 2. We did not rock them because we wanted them to be able to comfort themselves to sleep if they woke up in the middle of the night. Good luck

We always layed ours down together kissed them all good night and turned off the light and closed the door. They would cry at first, but got over it after awhile. Now they are 16mths and we read a story, say our prayers, kiss good night and they go to sleep on their own. It is hard to let them cry it out, but you may have to. It may be they know you are still in the room when you lay the 1st and 2nd down and they want you to hold them still. I am not sure how old they are, but just like the other response you can start letting them cry it out at 3 to 4 mths.
