#462, "Calling all Breast Feeding/Pumping Moms!"

Hello! I just gave birth to BBG trips on 3/11 and started pumping breast milk about two days post c-section due to complications. I'm about 2 1/2 weeks post-op and I am pumping an average of 24 - 28 oz a day, about 5 times a day (when I'm not exhausted) for 15 min each session.

Are these numbers good? Should I be pumping more or more often? How can I increase my milk?

My babies drink about 50 - 60 mls of breast milk fortified with 22 Cal Neosure every three hours.

I am new at all of this, so ANY advise would be helpful! Thanks so much!

Blessings,
Christina

Congrats! Sounds good! But if you really want to build up and increase your supply and output, you should be pumping every 3 hours around the clock.
This is what I did and I made lots of milk. Enough for them to have breastmilk during the day and formula only at night. Some pumping moms have never even had to supplement, maybe they have more advice.

Best of luck!

Congratulations! It was all new to me, too. Everyone is different, but this is what I did.

I pumped every three hours during the day and four hours at night. Produced enough to feed babies and freeze for later use. I kept up this schedule for the first 2-3 months. My babies were in the NICU for a little over a month and a half. After the babies were home it was hard to maintain that schedule, so I cut back to pumping every 4-6 hours. My babies had breastmilk only for the first four months. We started formula in January with one feeding per day and slowly increased the number of formula feedings over the last few months. Last week we used the last of the frozen breastmilk and I am still pumping to give them 1-2 feedings per day.

Hope this helps!
Good Luck!

Congrats! I pumped as much as I could and always brought the full supply to the NICU. They stored it in their fridge and eventually they ran out and I could not keep up with their feedings. We had to supplement formula and that occured when they came home too. Just do as much as you can. Every little bit helps in the NICU. My babies are absolutely HUGE now! We did the Neosure as well and now are in Similac Soy.

My girls are almost 10 weeks old now. I pump every two hours during the day when at all possible (sometimes it's more like three) but I always make sure to get at least 8 sessions in per day. I also make sure that they are all 20 minutes long. Sounds really dorky, but I bought a cheap watch at wal-mart with a timer on it. I set it each time I start, that way I always know when my two hours are up!

I have had good success with pumping and have had enough milk for all three. I wake up every 4-5 hours at night to pump as well. We are also doing one formula feed per night (per doc's recommendation) and freezing any extra milk for when I go back to work. Good luck!

Congrats on your new trio.

The amount of BM you're producing is great! My girls were 27 weekers and are now 6 months old. I've been pumping milk ever since they were born and am still pumping.

Here's what I found and were told by our lactation nurse to be helpful:

To increase supply:
1. get plenty of rest (this is critical)
2. try to pump every 2 or 3 hours (it was and still is crazy--but I did it every 2 hours which did increase supply over time)
3. eat oatmeal (I didn't want to take any herbals although I was told fenugreek (sp?) would and should increase your supply.

I'm BFing one of my girls now and generally produce anywhere from 16 to 22 oz a day for my other two girls. I've also had to pump every 3 or sometimes 4 or 5 hours now because my girls take up most of my time. In our experience, as our girls got bigger, they demanded more and more milk (going from 40 ml to now 170 ml). So they only get about one or two BM feeds a day.

Hope this helps,
tran

I have bbg triplets that are 3 months now and Breastfeeding/pumping has been a rollarcoaster. I pumped for a month every 3 hours for 20 minutes and tried all different suppliments. Sometimes I get great big bottles full and sometimes nothing would come out. I also have a 2yo whom I breastfeed till he was 18mo, so this experience has been very fustrating. My girl has not tolerated any kind of formula so I descided to completely breast feed her and the boys whenever I can. I have done this for about 1 and half months. Then for about 2 weeks now I have added one of the boys to being completely breastfeed. I plan on adding the last boy in hopefully 2 weeks so that they will all be breastfeed soon.

I am just going with my heart and doing the best I can. I think that is all we can do. Plus my husband likes being included in the feedings, during the day time hours...lol, so if I am wore out I always let people help. I don't pump anymore. The 2 breastfeeding babies clean me out. I try not to be hard on myself so I guess thats the only advise I can give.

The one thing I do dislike about breastfeeding triplets is that I feel like my ass is glued to the recliner and I am getting fat...lol. It takes at least an hour and a half to feed all three and it starts over in 2 hours. I feed at 10, 2, and 6 around the clock, thank you NICU! The babies are always on schedual with a couple of break threws.

Good Luck, we are fighting right along side you!!
