We aim for 2 naps a day. One is usually a pretty long nap, and the other shorter. We put them down when they look tired, usually around 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Occasionally, they won't take 2 naps and just one, but end up going down for the night earlier. We haven't had any problem with them not sleeping through the night, and it seems like they actually sleep better at night the more they nap during the day. . . . Mine just hit 9 months this week and they nap at 10:00 am for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Then, they need an afternoon nap at 2:00 -- this can last between 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I try not to let them sleep past 4:00 to protect their 7:00 bedtime. I find if they don't sleep past 3:30, bedtime also has to be moved up.
They really struggle to sleep if not in their beds (even if their bed is a pac n play in the dark but heated pantry! LOL). Good luck! DD - 3 years old BGB - born at 36 weeks in 7/08
