#51, "Starving!"

Just wondering if anyone else is going through this and if you have any solutions.

The girls are taking 4 8 oz bottles a day (sometimes 9) and two solid food feedings (about 5 tbs each) a day. They are waking up now at 5:30 (thank you time change, the bane of infant parents existence) starving! I mean they are really hungry! Am I not feeding them enough? I thought I read or heard that 32 oz a day was the max for this age.

What are you all feeding your trio? I know I have read this same thread before so sorry if it's a repeat.

I also heard that solid food isn't really giving them a lot of calories, it's more the experience. Is that really true? I mean, it would seem like it would fill them up.

Thanks for any help and sorry for the fifty thousand questions.

maybe going through a growth spurt? thats the only time any of mine actually finish their bottles but my babies hate their bottles so we are lucky if they hit the min 24oz a day sometimes they only get 18 or 20oz and at most my son will take 28oz. we were giving the solids 3 times a day but then they really werent eating their bottles so now they only get breakfast and dinner and they get about 4oz of food at each meal they eat their solids very well. but like i said i cut out the lunch meal because at this age they still need the majority of fat and calories from the formula. my trio are just a few weeks older than yours born on feb 24. i wish mine ate 4 8 oz bottles a day! maybe they would sleep through the night then

32 ounces is the maximum. Food is for practice eating because their primary nutrition needs to come from formula or BM. However, that doesn't mean they don't need calories from food too. Food does help to fill them up. It they are still hungry, feed them more food. Maybe you need to add a 3rd solid feeding or just feed them more at each meal. Watch their formula consumption as you increase the solids. If it stays the same or decreases slightly you are OK. If formula consumption decreases more you are feeding too many solids.

Once they reach about 9 months their need for formula will decrease and the solids will increase. If you go by adjusted age keep that in mind of course. From 9-12 months 20-24 ounces of formula is ok and finger and table foods should be started. Your kids aren't there yet but it isn't too far away.

Terry ~ Our trio is only a couple of weeks younger than yours & I got the go ahead from our pedi to start a 3rd meal. It has helped sustain them a bit more. We are also doing 4 7-8 oz bottles a day of EBM. I know my trio could take more but I try to leave them w/ a little room to eat. Also, we are on the brink of when their solids should start becoming part of where they get nutrients & calories so to get them in the habit, we added that 3rd meal. Hopefully that will help you some!
