#639, "brain cysts 2 weeks old - please help!!!!!"

Hi,

Weekly ultrasounds were done to all our triplets during pregnancy, then when they where 3 days old and at two weeks of age. First scans (pregnancy + 3 days old) did not show any bleeding or abnormalities in the brain.

At the two week ultrasound two of them had cysts - one had two and the other one had one, no signs of bleeding.

They were born 31 weeks + 5 days. All of them had surfactant treatment for 1-2 days which is routine as I understand at this gestation. Two needed a bit of extra oxygen for a week and a half - not from the machine. Birth weights: 2,11 - 4,2 - 4,5 Now they babies are with us and seem perfectly find - eating and sleeping well, all tests OK - all perfectly healthy.

Our doctor`s substitute mentioned we should have another ultrasound in a couple of month and suggested to wait and see. He also mentioned that similar cysts are common with premature babies - if they are common then why cant I find any information about it from the internet?

I kindly ask people with similar experiences to share their stories. To be honest with you, I have never been so lost and terrified in my life.

The father of three beautiful girls - extremely concerned and greatful for any information!

One of my daughters had a cyst as well. They were born 30 weeks 2 days. There was some bleeding at the first scan at 32 weeks which resolved itself (or resolved itself enough to the point of being inconsequential). My daughter Julia, at the second ultrasound at 36 weeks, showed a 3 mm cyst that hadn't been present before. They diagnosed it as periventricular leukomalacia; I don't know if there's other things the cyst could be unrelated to that. It puts her at an increased risk of cerebral palsy. We weren't told to get her re-scanned, though I did wonder about that.

I think the thing to do is just watch them and see how they progress. It doesn't always mean they'll suffer developmental problems from it,just that they're at an increased risk.

Are they subependymal cysts? The same thing happened to one of my daughters, if that is the same type of cyst your babies have. At her first u/s, there were no signs of any bleeds...and then when she was a couple of weeks old, she had a subependymal cyst and still no signs of a bleed. The doctors explained to us that it may be some type of growth variation, and likely nothing to worry about (he said that neonates in utero often have them and they resolve by the time they are born...and therefore they often see them in healthy preemies). They scheduled her for a follow-up ultrasound around her due-date. At that time the cyst had spontaneously resolved.

She is 4 now and neurotypical except for SPD (sensory processing disorder). She reached all of her milestones on time or ahead of time. I hope the same for you!

My singleton had what appeared to be a cyst on my 18 week u/s. Since he wasn't a high risk pregnancy and I carried him full term, we did not go back and check it. When he was two, we discovered that the "cyst" was actually a brain tumor called a tectalglioma. This tumor is very rare, but you should definitely follow up on the cysts. It was causing hydrocephalus.

My son is fine now after surgery to fix his hydro. Other than having a benign golf ball size tumor in his brain, he is a hundred percent typically developing.
