#743, "Preventative Cerclage Question"

Hi everyone, I am new to the site. I am 18 weeks with BGG. I went to my first appointment with the peri Dr today and she recommended doing a Cerclage to prevent preterm labor. I immediatly went home to look at risk factors on the internet and now I am very worried. My cevics was 4.4 today. I have had 5 babies one born at 32 weeks. Has anyone had an elective cerclage prior to having any problems? Of course, my fear is that I will do something to try and help my pregnancy go as long as I can and end up with infections, preterm labor etc.

Thank you

Hi,
I am currently 16w6d pregnant and I had a preventative cerclage done at 14w. My peri had told me it was an option and that it works best when it is done prior to when it is determined to be needed (emerg cerclage). I decided that I wanted to do whatever I could to ensure my babies stay in as long as possible especially since this is my first pregnancy longer than 9w. Everything went great with my cerclage and I am glad I did it. I am sure there are others who may have different stories as there are several others who have had cerclages.

Thank you for responding. I told my Peri I wanted to anything possible to keep the babies in as long as possible and then went home and scared myself by looking up everthing on the internet. It helps to hear from someone who went through the same thing successfully.

I didnt get a preventive cerclage...was measuring 4+ and had tree prior full term pregnancies...
then at 19 weeks all heck broke lose...i dialated and funneled...straight to the hospital...cerclages after 17ish weeks are controversial..
well I was in the hospital a few weeks...dialated worse, baby A was coming and had emergency cerclage at about 22 weeks..it was that or lose all my babies...even after cerclage it was a long fight to stay pregnant...dialated thru it, cervical tears, etc...but I made it to 32.1.
I wish I would have had one done preventatively..might not have mattered..but might have spared me 100+ days in the hospital on bokoo meds..etc.
Id get one. Just me two cents.

Tonya - I lost triplets at 22 weeks because my cervix dilated and I didn't have a cerclage. I was at the hospital waiting for a cerclage at 22 weeks when my water broke. For the next pregnancy, a different peri put in a cerclage around week 17 and I had twins born at 36 weeks. Obviously, I highly recommend it.

You will get more answers about this if you put this on the main board...

I did not have a cerclage during my triplet pregnancy but I really would have rather had one just for the piece of mind. I did not end up NEEDING one, I went to almost 36 weeks and never had an issue with preterm labor, or early dilating and effacement, but if it had been up to me, I would have had one at the end of the first trimester.

With your history of preterm labor, I think it would be a very good idea.

I had an elective cerclage because 2 of my previous children were preterm. For me it was a life saver! It held my cervix closed until I delivered at 32 weeks 5 days because of suspected fetal distress. The cerclage was holding and seems like it would have held for longer. I had no complications from it. I recommend it for anyone with any history of preterm labor. It is better to get it done electively than to have to get it done emergently.
