#1225, "What are you getting your 3yr/4yrd old for x-mas?"

Just wondering what the latest craze is for toys for this year? Trying to figure out what I am going to get the boys. I really do not want to get to crazy this year so I want to do a little research and get the most for my money. Toys they are really going to love. Would love ideas.

Thanks,
Angela

So far I've bought:
- microphone that plugs into the TV ($8 at Target)
- 3 ViewMasters and a bunch of discs ($5? each)
- bunch of books

From grandparents (they won't tell me which):
- bike that plugs into TV from Fisher Price
- Fisher Price computer keyboard with write-on pad
- Drum pad or drum set, and yes, I'm crazy
- Babies that move, make noise and "drink" from bottles (this is my mom's big idea)

The kids love to pretend, so I'm sewing them some hand puppets. I figured I could spend $20-30 on fabric and make tons of characters and animals. I've turned cheap.

If they were girls, I'd suggest they get some dress-up clothes, but maybe you could get them police hats or firemen hats? My girls love to dress up but they especially love the hats and purses. Man, I'm gonna be in trouble!!!

All I have so far is some Lightning McQueen shirts and a Little Tykes doctor set. I think this will be a good year for imagination play.

I am debating on a tool set, like a little tykes or whatever tool bench and stuff. Do kids actually ever really play with those? I just can't see it happening unless they actually had something to pretend on. How can you pretend put something together?

Looking forward to reading some more replies

Tools are a HUGE hit with our boys. They pretend to fix or build so much stuff... really any other toy that's laying around, furniture, or even imaginary stuff. They also love to pull out their tools when Daddy is fixing something. It's so cute to see them run to get their tool box when Daddy starts a project. They dump their tools next to the real tools, try to "help",by using their tools and have even offered their tools for Daddy's use.

A cute story... last summer the electric went out one day in a storm, so the TV wouldn't work. One ds ran and got his tools and dumped them all in front of the TV screen. When I asked what he was doing, he said he was going to fix the TV so it would work again.

ooohhh... I need to get my girls tools. I have a set myself and they often see me working with them. I wonder if they have little tool belts that they could wear when I do?

We have some tool belts, but they are from my bil's company that sells tools. However, I'd be willing to bet that there are tool belts out there. We were at TRU last night and I remember seeing some "Home Depot" tools on some shelves. I didn't look closely though, since we already have enough tools, but I would think there would be a tool belt with that line.

My dd also plays with the tools too. I love it because she's always asking "What this called, mommy?". Of course, half the time I'm just guessing at the right name. My boys have corrected me a few times already! lol

We bought three Plasma Cars since my friend, who has triplets said they were a big hit with her trio. I'm kind of excited about those because they were a great deal and my girls LOVE their Big Wheels so I'm hoping these are just as fun. Plus, I think they can use them for a long time.

I want to get them a cool, big dollhouse, but I have yet to find one. I want one that lights up inside and the doorbell rings. Still on the lookout for one with a few bells and whistles.

We are loving our Vtechs and Vsmiles so I think I'll add some games to those.

And then the usual little things like some more books, (you can't have enough books!) puzzles and art pads with new markers and pencils.

Yeah, I think that's what they had. Here's a link:

Just wanted to clarify that I don't personally know the family you're referring to. But, I do know the video you mentioned.

A friend of mine with a 7 year old trio suggested the plasma cars.

For the boys:
motorcylce racing thing that zooms off a ramp.
walkie-talkies
Leapster2's
foam swords (so they'll stop using my vac hose attachment)
spiderman or superman stuff

To share with their sister:
Cool School computer thing, has a keyboard and writing pad, attaches to the computer
A 3-in-1 game that folds away nicely
A huge anatomy floor puzzle (mine are fascinated with what's going on inside their bodies)

For Ryley:
Polly Pocket galore
A magic tea set
Leapster2

I think that's it. It's too early to think this hard! lol

Not sure if anyone has a TJ Maxx in their neck of the woods, but I saw a VSmile for $29.99. We got ours last year at TRU for around $50. So, that's a great deal and we love it, too. A lot of fun, educational games to play.

We too were thinking of the trampoline. We went to a b-day party today and that is all they wanted to do.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'll share mine when I narrow the list.

Good ideas!

I have bought the Helmet Hero's my kids have bugged for them for a while now, and I think we are doing legos, games, and maybe something learning like leapster or V-Smile. I would love more ideas too. I need something for active boys in the house all winter. What type of trampoline are you talking about?

My folks got the kids a 14 ft trampoline (for their birthday next week) and had a giant hole dug in the ground to have it set into, So the trampoline is level with the ground... the kids LOVE it!

I've heard that a lot of boys like the whole Thomas the tank Engine track and trains. You can get the starter track and trains for like 40$ and then if family wants to add on to it over the holidays/birthdays, they can add to it for 10$- 100$. I thought that was a good idea.

We're planning on a mini trampoline with a handle bar for inside the house. We haven't decide on a specific one yet, but my niece has one that the triplets love to play on when we go to her house.

I plan to get my one ds a soccer ball... he's always kicking those plastic balls around and says he's playing soccer.

We've bought all three those kiddie animal flash lights, the ones where the mouth opens up when you turn it on and the light comes from inside of the mouth. They're probably for younger kids than mine, but my three constantly steal our real flashlights, which I hate. I'll either not be able to find one when we need it, or the batteries will be dead. So I am hoping the toy ones will keep them preoccupied.

Some puzzles. Thomas for the boys and I haven't gotten my dd's yet.

I'm also thinking some art supplies, play dough and accessories, some DVD's, lego sets that make things (like a Thomas train, etc). I'd also love to get them those Bounce back race cars (Not sure of name), but haven't seen them around when I've looked.

Other than that, I don't know. I need to get out some time to look around.

FYI on those Tonka RC cars - if you get more than one, there is only one frequency and so they don't work as well with 2 of them going. One remote will start moving both, etc. It's frustrating. But they are okay with it for now and after the first couple days (we gave them for b-days last week) they are only playing one at a time.

Just wanted to share that info.

I saw these cool Zero Gravity Micros on tv yesterday. They are RC cars that can go up walls, under (upside down) tables and just seem really cool. I looked them up on TRU website and had a good review of really working. They are geared to 6 and up. But we may go investigate them further since they still have b-day money left over. They also come with different frequencies, so should work with more than one in the house.

My DS really wants one of those zero gravity cars so I ordered one for him as well as two cousins around the same age. He may need some help with the remote control but even watching DH drive it on the ceiling should be fun. I was happily surprised that the parent reviews on Amazon, Toysrus.com, etc were very positive.

Other ideas:
- We all LOVE the Stomp Rocket. It is very soft so can be used inside.
- Battery-powered tools for DS. He got a chainsaw recently that he is really enjoying. One that looks interesting is the Design & Drill Activity Center where they drill in screws to make pictures/designs.
- DS likes to collect marbles and I found some that look like planets.
- He also wants a marching band drum - any kind of instruments are great at this age.
- Light saber, power ranger action toy
- Lots of board games for all the kids: Candyland, Chutes & Ladders, Hungry Hippos, Cariboo
- For the girls: Barbie Cure ‘N Care animals (one DD wants to be a vet), Fur Real animals, spin art set, a Scratchin’ Fashion kit, makeup kit, etc.
- I am getting this for one DD but it would be great for boys too:
Real Bugs Discover Kit

Keep the ideas coming, these are great!

Hmmm... I didn't think I would get more tools, but I'll have to check out the battery powered ones. And I've never heard of Stomp Rockets ot the zero gravity cars. Gotta check those out too. Thanks!

Scooters for everyone so far. It'll keep them busy indoors and outdoors this winter.

One ds asked Santa for a dinosaur and dd asked for a baby doll. The other ds didn't want to ask Santa for anything.

As for toys this year, I'm at a loss. They really have everything they need. I can't think of anything that will WOW them. Even what they asked for they have. We have tons of dinosaurs and babies of all sizes, colors, making noise and not. How many more can they have. I can't wait until they can make a list of things they want when they are a little older.

I am going to Toys R Us to check it out. I am also going to go to an independent toy company in our mall that's alittle pricer but has more unique toys. We have totally picked thru Walmart! I think we seem to own every toy they have!
