#26, "Halloween Confessions..."

Okay, I'm reading all of the posts about y'all making costumes from scratch, and some expensive and lovely costume purchases. I've decided to come clean:

I found lovely costumes to purchase for my kids this year, but got too involved with work and failed to order any. And, since I've only sewn for desperate mothers of poop artists, I knew better than to engage in costume construction.

So, I took my children to a party last Saturday and another one on Sunday. I told them that we were getting ready to go and that they should decide what "costume" they'd be wearing. Interestingly, they did great! Caidan ran upstairs and put on his shorts and t-shirt, and then threw on a "road construction worker's vest" from the dress-up box, and grabbed a toy hand saw. (Go figure, huh?? Anyone want to cut up some asphalt??) Caeleigh ran upstairs and returned in a too small Cinderella costume. However, it began itching immediately, so she returned in a chef's coat and white apron (with nothing underneath...not NICE!!) We opted for some shorts under and went on to the Saturday party. Of course, Caidan elected the same costume on Sunday, while Caeleigh insisted upon a ballerina leotard and tutu from her standard dance outfits for Sunday.

I know that I should feel guilty and like a bad mother, but I was amazed and pleased at their ingenuity and their willingness to pull things together for themselves. And, frankly, I didn't have any strength left to take charge of costumes. I'm wondering if this approach will work for school lunches??

Any other confessions?? You know it's s'posed to be good for the soul...

Good job kids. It's amazing what their little minds can come up with. My three constantly amaze me all the time. I will also admit that the past three yr I bought their costumes. I just didn't feel like it, call me lazy. This yr is the first that I sort of made their costumes. I bought stretch blk wide leg capris and a blk turtleneck. I then bought blk, white feather boas and leopard fur and hot glued it around the neck, wrist, and bottom of the pant. I then found coordinating cat ears and tails and blk gloves. They are going as kitty's. I made them on Sun. and I must admit that they turned out pretty cute. Hot glue is my bf.
So have fun with the new found costumes and becareful.

How creative of them. I'll have to try that next year!!.

This year, I was in Target for something else. The kids saw the halloween stuff so we went to look. I asked them what they wanted to be, they each picked out an outfit and we were done.

They actually had their costumes a month early. Thats an all-time record for me. Charlie was wearing his the whole first week we got it. He loves to dress up. This year I am going to buy a bunch of costumes after halloween when everything is on sale. They'll be getting dress-up for x-mas and maybe next year they can pick their halloween outfit from their stash and save mom a few bucks

When my kids play "dress up" they only ever put on a shirt and their pink/purple high heel shoes. Can you guess what they look like?!? lol

My confession is that I'm considering buying stitch witchery to finish these costumes. I haven't even started two of them!

Cat,
Don't feel bad at all! I think it's great that you are letting them use their imaginations and they got to "create" their own costumes. I think that is way cooler than me spending a fortune of pre-made store-bought costumes that I had to bribe them into.

My confession which I already posted was that I had to offer them M&M's to get into the darn things. Bribery works, but what kind of message does it send? Who knows? Anyway, I felt horrible forcing their costumes on them and then feeding them tons of junk to keep them happy in them! So I think I have you beat in the feeling guilty catagory. I never let them have candy, so it was a big deal to them.

Hey Cat!

So I don't really have a confession, but I absolutely had to jump in so our names would be in the same post for old times sake!!! LOL!!

Great initiative by your kiddos! The Z's are going as (are you ready for another TC flashback?!).....The Three Amigos!! We have authentic junior size sombreros from our trip to Mexico, striped ponchos, neckties and guitars. Very cute and wildly colorful!!

It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to see your name in lights once again on a now-main forum. See you around!

Ellyn, the three little Z's(bbb 4/12/02), two littler S's(gb 7/22/04)
and seven other siblings(yes, that's 12!!)

I'm a bad mom - I don't even have Halloween costumes! I wanted to take mine out this year because they would probably really enjoy it. But I didn't want to spend all that money on costumes. So my trio will( again) not be introduced to Halloween this year.

That´s great! My husband and I decided to take advantage of the fact that the girls have no clue that Halloween exists yet, and we´re going to dress them up as triplets. Or, as one of my nieces suggested, Katie can dress up as Gabi, Gabi as Laura and Laura as Katie (they´re identical). I´m real high on the creativity scale, as you can tell. LOL!

Actually, that would be kinda funny! Let the girls run around with shirts on that have each other's names on them.

Well, the kids are supposed to dress up for Halloween tomorrow at school, so that means I'm on an even shorter deadline. Since yesterday, I've sewed on ONE SLEEVE. At this rate, they might be done by Christmas.

Speaking of which, I'd better get my butt off the internet!
