My kids are now using sippy cups and have recently started throwing their cups off their trays multiple times per meal. I understand this is normal but has anyone figured our or found a contraption that can be tied around cups so that when they throw them they don't hit the floor? I thought of string, but wanted to see if anyone had any better ideas. I don't care what the package says, spill proof cups still leak liquid when they hit the floor.

Thanks-
Tiffany

The fun isn't in throwing, but in making Mommy pick them up over and over and over, and watching her reaction.

"Uh oh, you must be all done with your cup!" Don't give it back.

We didn't give them sippies at the table at that age for this very reason. Tried what Megan did...didn't work. The trouble was that they really weren't wanting the milk or water at that time. We started giving them milk (then when they got older we did water water) sippies after the meal while we cleaned up and it worked much better. It also let them focus on eating first then drinking.

When my girls started trying this new trick I picked up the bottle and helped them hand it to me and say "done". I did this each time without emotion and when they did on their own I praised them for it. We have no troubles with that now. Our new trouble is throwing food on the floor...

We have that trouble too! I especially hate it when they are eating watermellon. My latest attempt to get it to stop works as follows. The first time they throw it they are warned that they will have to clean it up and miss out on fun computer time with mama (we have one girl who has weight issues yet so I cannot take the food away as punishment). After the meal, whoever threw food gets to clean it up with DH and the good girls get to go to the computer with me and look at google images of babies and play with the mouse. (need to come up with more "reward" ideas that don't require DH to supervise cleanup while I supervise reward) So far it seems to be working out.

My triplets didn't pull this one, but my older daughter did. As a doting parent, I picked up the bottle any number of times. This also happened when I put her down to bed (this was before they knew that babies should not go down with a bottle, thank you).

Well, all of this changed the day my precious daughter (who had a strong throwing arm) gave her bottle a heave that broke out her bedroom window. After that, she was not handed her bottle until she had "submitted" by lying down in preparation for her bottle and bedtime. And, if she threw her bottle, she lost it. Period.

It took precisely one time losing her bottle and the problem was solved.

Of course, not giving the bottle in the first instance also works, but I really like the "cause and effect" lessons involved when the baby learns that they have control over what they do as a result of understanding the effect once they've done it.

My trio does this too but it is finally getting better.

They do not get cups until they have finished their meal.

If they throw their food on the floor they get their plate taken away and sent to thier room for time out. After time out they get to finish their food. If they continue throwing food on the floor they just get removed from the table and mealtime for him/her is over.
