We have a Head Start program here in Indiana. My sister's good friend works for Head Start. She told us to apply even if we didn't think they would be accepted. We did, but they weren't accepted.

I think it depends on the teacher's on how well the program is. I've heard pros & cons from ours. The pros are that they are fed there, they don't have to be potty trained and it is State funded. I have heard that our First Steps is really crowded. That is one of the cons. There aren't enough teachers for all the kids, therefore there isn't enough attention per child.

My kids did get accepted into another program. It is a little similar, I think. They started yesterday & will go everyday from 8 am-10:30 am. They feed them breakfast. They all had speech therapy & OT. This school helps specialize in it. One of my boys has sensory issues & they will also work with him.

Good luck. I'm sure they will be just fine.

two of mine just completed the program last June. They were in for a year. My daughter is on an IEP and goes to district run pre-school for special needs. One of my boys went to the district also, but only for two days, so he joined his brother at the Head Start the other three days. It worked out very well, even though we were busy running around to three different schools I agree with PP in that it REALLY depends on your teacher. Our teacher was great, and my boys both learned their ABC's and were counting to well over 100 by the time the started Kinder in July. On the other hand, I had things coming home misspelled from the aids. I tried putting them in private pre-schools for two years, but it just became too much of a financial burden and overall, I was very very happy.

My girls were in the three year old program last year wich is two center visits a month and a weekly home visit full of activities. My Girls thrived in the program their teacher was amazing and so caring. This year they will be in the 4K program through head start and the teacher has already come to meet them. There are 6 4K sites in town here and the only one that busses is the one my girls are in. The bus will pick them up in our driveway everyday and bring them back to the same spot. There is no way I could afford to pay for preschool so this has been an awesome option for our family! They do eat a lot there but our center is very clean and I can go in at anytime and help out or just sit and watch! I am very excited to have this opportunity!

I started as a Head Start parent and now I work there! I love love love the program. I'm a teacher's aide. If you qualify for the program, I would do it!
