I'm looking for recommendations on plates and spoons/forks; are there any good plates that have suction cups? I'm pretty sure mine would throw their plates otherwise.

Also, any really good bibs out there? One of mine thinks it's quite funny to pull his bib off so preferably something wih snaps instead of velcro. TIA!

LOL! So far as the plates go...there is no suction cup ones that they will not either A) Figure out how to rip off B) Spill the contents all over while trying to rip off. A good bowl with a non-skid bottom is about your best bet. We had to put the food directly on the table/tray for a long time. Everything else was a toy to fight over.

Take and Toss spoons and forks have worked pretty well for us. They will get the hang of forks first...stabbing is easier than keeping spoons level.

Bibs...there are a lot of great ones out there. My favorites are the Dex dura bibs are great and pretty affordable. Ours have lasted through about a year of use before they needed replacing (we also needed to get the larger ones at that time). They are often at wal-mart...here is a picture of them.

I agree on the Dex Dura Bibs. They are great.

Suction cup dishes don't work. I just started with Gerber plastic plates and bowls. Then we moved on to the character or kiddy kind that have designs. I think they are made of melamine??? We also started with Take N Toss forks and spoons but as soon as I knew they weren't going to stab themselves we moved to metal. It is harder to stab with Take N Toss forks.

I did not actually start mine on silverware until about 16 months. They still ate on their high chair tray for a couple more weeks after that.

Ok good; for some reason I was beginning ot feel like my kiddos were behind b/c at 15 months they still finger feed off of their high chair trays. We haven't tried forks/spoons yet and guess we'll give it a go in the next month. Thanks

We didn't use bowls or plates for ages for exactly that reason. Just put the food directly on the tray. I probably would have tried the suction ones, but had heard (on this website) nightmare stories about toddlers prying them up and the extra force when the suction let go causing the food to fling farther than it would have gone had they just dumped it.

Don't bother with snaps - they yank loose just as easily as velcro. Go for the bibs that look like towels with a stretchy hole for the head to go through.

If you can find them you can try the old school bibs that tie on. I guess you could make them if you were desprate.

The Boon bowls have suction cups and are fabulous - we have been using them for a long time and they are dishwasher proven. Love them.

I bought plates with suction cups (I can't remember the brand!) but they came apart into several pieces and the suction cups came off for washing but I couldn't get them back on. I think they were Gerber. Beware of the removable suction cups!

Best,
Hilary
