My boys just turned five and I am wondering what kind of chores you have your children doing daily/weekly.

Mine will be five in a couple months. I do have them doing "chores", but we don't have designated chores yet. We don't even call it chores. Although I think it's time.

The things mine are required to do is make their beds and clean up their toys. They will vacuum for me. (That's a treat and they all fight over that one.) They help dust and they also help empty the dishwasher.

But now that you mention it, maybe is should be more of a formal arrangement.

My kids are turning 5 next month, and my husband and I have been talking about this. We have both decided that it is time for them to have more chores than just making their beds and cleaning up thier toys (which they don't do anyway). I am interested in hearing all of the replys.

My dd is just 4 but her chores are feeding the dogs and picking up her toys when asked to do so. When I ask her to, she is also helping fold laundry, empty dishwasher and rinse dishes we wash by hand, and she loves to use my swivel sweeper on the floors. The only thing she doesn't like doing is picking up her toys which I don't make her do daily, but I've just told her that she has to clean up her mess and I'll clean up my mess and the babies mess. If she does good, I'll give her a treat.

Oh my gosh, you've got me so excited, I "chored" them all this morning and am 20 minutes early for preschool and I'm sitting here typing.

How long before the newness wears off and they stop wanting to help?

I went to the teacher store and bought a chore chart for $3 that you can use a wipe away marker with *I can't think of their proper name.* LOL I bought magnet strips and put in on my dishwasher. I change around the "hard" chores each week but they do have regular chores.
BTW my girls are 5.5 yrs old. They really like to check off their chores when they are done. I don't make them do the "hard" chores every day.

Regular Chores:
Make Bed, Clean up toys, put away their laundry and clear their place at the table each meal.

Change up "hard" chores:
Vacume and they do like that one, Help me sweep kitchen, They sweep their bathroom, clean their toliet(I use a flushable cleaning pad like scrubing bubbles), wipe up bathroom counter, fold laundry, help set table, unload dishwasher, clean windows and dust.

I think really at this age they can do a lot you just have to watch them.

Sue~

I encourage my kids to put their toys away and since their pre-school has a "club" they can join when they've mastered something at home, it's been a real incentive to join the Pick Up Your Toys Club!

We also have been making it a point to toss shoes in their basket and hang up their coats.

And I can't believe how well they clean glass and windows with a little Windex and a rag when I'm tackling some cleaning. If they're having fun, then that's a bonus.

So, we're not really doing chores, but they know Mommy is happy with some order and they're excited to help.

Lisa

mine are almost 4 and we don't call these chores, so maybe they don't count, but this is what they do everyday:

clean up all their toys/books etc and put in the proper place
put their clothes in the hamper and pjs back in bed
put shoes in the shoe basket
set the table
and if they are sloppy at dinner or the floor is crumby, then dustpan/brush the floor.

stuff they offer to do at times, but I don't expect regularly (or it takes longer with their help!)
- put away groceries
- clean (they just like getting a rag and wiping stuff)
- helping cook or make stuff
- sort socks, put stuff rightside out again, fold washrags

Our four-year-olds do a daily chore M-F. They are: help mom with dishes, dust front room, pick up toys in front room, and clean the bathroom (wipe down toilet and sink/counter with wipe). We've been doing this for a few months and it goes very well and doesn't take them too long. We have a chore wheel so they rotate every day.

I love this topic! Thanks for posting it!

My kids are responsible for making their beds every day, and tidying up their rooms. They put their laundry in our "laundry spot," although I must admit that we really need a hamper for laundry. lol. They also set the table and pick up their toys after themselves.

I haven't had them dust or vacuumn -- exciting thoughts, thank you... And, I'm too anal about our laundry to let them take charge of their own stain removal/laundry. They love to help me cook, but I'm not sure that this counts.

You all have inspired me to up the anty on the chores.

I read this post the other day and it got me thinking that maybe our girls should be doing more than what they are doing now. So yesterday I just finished vacuuming and the girls came home from school and I asked one of them if they wanted to run it. Wow the response was unbelievable. I had each of them do a rm and they loved it. Of course this is after I had already ran it. So I think a little bit more practice and I might have three little ones that will vacuum for me. They also completely cleaned up the playrm in the basement. I gave them all a dollar for all of their help. And of course with in a day it was trashed again. So today I told them to pick it up again or I am taking back the dollar. Wow they moved fast on that one. Do you think I was wrong for saying that to them?
