#7443, "Pre-K (4yr) program..."

My girls will be 3 in May but thinking ahead since we just received a brochure on Pre-K programs in the area. For those that have put your children in Pre-K programs, did you do 1/2 day sessions or whole day sessions and how many days? They have so many options and wanted to hear other experiences. This school system happens to have a full day K program so I want to prepare them best as I can for K.

Thoughts???

My girls started with a prek program through the school district. It was from 9-2 every day and rode the prek bus. It was definately hard at first for them to adjust to it. But after adjusting our own schedules at home they soon got used to it and loved it. They are now in K and love it even more. I definately suggest doing something whether it's just a few days a wk, I feel they need that kind of structure to get them ready for K, KWIM?

My trio just turned 3 and i'm going to have them evaluated in May for the 3yr old gifted class that is offered for our school district. Mine are already in Mother's Day Out for 2 days a week. I really don't think the transition for us will be too dificult.

Hi,

My girls presently go from 9-11:15 mon and tues to a 2 year old program and next year they will be in the 3 year old program which is 9-11:30 am wed, thur and friday. I really like they only going for 2 1/2 hours because it gives them the time to enjoy preschool but then they are still spending the rest of the day with me. I think at 2-3 years old a couple hours is enough to get them ready for elementary school.

Mine are in PreK 3 two days a week from 9-11:15. Next year in the PreK 4 it's 3 days for 4 hours. Our district also has full day Kindgergarten. I do not want them in full day Kindergarten. They are currently in a Catholic Preschool in town. Since our town has full day so do the private schools. We are hoping to move within two years so they won't be in full day. I think I might be in the minority here but I just think they don't need full day at 5 years old. I only have such a limited time with them and then that's it...

when we first started my boys in preschool when they were 3, we enrolled them for 3 days/wk, 3 hrs/day. that amount of time seemed just right for them (and me too!) at first. not too long afterwards, though, i believe they would've all appreciated a longer session as they love to learn. they bring home what they've learned in school and try to repeat their experiences at home. they constantly talk about school and would even pretend play as if they're at school.

but it would truly depend on you and your children and how you'd feel they'd do. if there are so many options at the school, unlike the limited options at our preschool, maybe you could begin them with only a few hours/few times a week and then gradually increase their attendance time as you see fit.

My girls went to a PreK-4, 8:00-3:20, Monday-Friday. It took a few weeks for them to adjust (they'd fall asleep on the ride home). They liked school, though -- made lots of friends. Full day is good for parents who work all day. If you're a SAHM, 1/2 day sessions would by fine. Our district also has full-day Kindergarten. I think your kids will do fine whichever route you take. GL!

We only had one option at 3 years old, and that was two days a week (T/Th) for 3 hours, if I remember correctly. We could have EASILY handled FULL days or more HALF days. The kids absolutely loved their school and teachers.

Now we're in the Pre-K 4 year old program, 4 days a week, half days. This is perfect for us right now.

Next year is going to be 5 FULL days a week for Kindergarten. From what I can see, I don't think we'll have any problem transitioning to that.

Good luck!
