#7556, "the potty training screwup"

I am the WORST potty trainer in the world. I FINALLY have the big kids completely wake-time trained. FINALLY - they are almost FIVE, and we just finished the poop-training. I'm not even bothering with nighttime yet.

So time to turn to Elise, right? I've avoided dealing with her thus far b/c I just couldn't deal with any more half-trained kids. And I discovered that she has inherited my bladder of steel. So what's the problem, you ask? She has no opportunities to practice! She peed for the FIRST time since getting out of bed this morning at 2pm. Yep. TWO PM. She peed about a gallon at that point, so I think she just has a good-size bladder, not a physical issue.

But after the 2pm accident, I put a diaper on her and put her down for her nap. She'll probably pee while sleeping, and then won't pee again while awake today. So she had ONE opportunity all day to use the potty, and since we missed it, that's it.

How in the world do I train this kid? Can somebody else please please please please pretty please do it for me???? I HATE potty training! This is one topic I have read every book on, and am no better at than before I started! I just CAN'T DO IT!!

I actually think it is a good thing that she is holding it...that is step one in potty training. It sounds like she is really ready. I bet it will only take a couple of "accidents" for her to really get it.. I had the same problem with a couple of my kids and I remember wondering that it would take forever because I wouldn't have many "opportunities", but those were the kids that were easier to train because they really were ready. They didn't need 50 accidents for them to figure it out, 2 or 3 times of pee running down their leg and it clicked that they needed to run to the toilet.

Good luck. I trained #4 about 6 months ago and it was easy and quick....a week and he was completely done with diapers. And, I was a lousy potty trainer too.

Can she make herself pee for an M&M? I gave my oldest an M&M every time he went. He also could wait until lunch to pee for the first time of the day, but he LOVES chocolate. Luckily he did not become an overly frequent pee-er based on the reward, but it may be something to try.
Best of luck,
Nic

If she can hold it that long, she is already trained. Don't put her back in diapers. Just go for it!

I have stopped asking my kids if they need to go potty. I simply TELL them when it's time to go potty. Everybody lines up in the bathroom and takes a turn whether they have to go or not.

Ditto.

I found that sitting on the potty, on a schedule is what works for us for keeping the accidents down. (We average about every two to three hours)

One trained easily...three weeks of the schedule, then put the diaper in the potty...and she could somehow magically go. After about a week she had it down pat. For nap and night or long travel she wears a diaper, but keeps it dry 98% of the time.

One trained harder, 5 weeks of the schedule...then a session involving mom and dd in the big bathroom with the door shut, lots of water, juice and milk in new cups (they always drink a ton out of a new cup) and a lot of dancing around, crying, and tantrums...and finally success. After a week she is still not able to go on demand, and will wet any diaper she is in, but she keeps underware dry 90% of the time.

We are still working on #3...she will be in the bathroom with mom this weekend

Question for everyone....Did anyone else have each child go through a period of really obnoxious and mean behavior right before they figured it out? All three of ours have done this. After they get it...the clouds part, the sun shines and all is right in their world.

I am just going to agree with everyone else and say she is probably ready. We have one who also has a bladder of steel and was trained in one day. She was about the same age as your little girl if not a little younger. She has been in undies since day one and has never had an accident.

Maybe do what others have said, have a set time for her to use the potty everyday. Our little one would probably hold it too but she usually has little signs where I can tell she needs to go. I honestly think she would rather hold it. When she pees, it is a lot.

Good luck. She'll train easily and you will be good at it. You can do so many other things well with your kids that potty training may be your achilles heel

Thank you thank you thank you for the encouragement to go for it - WE DID IT! Put panties on her, and never looked back! She has only had one accident, and that was when she got , tangled in her church dress and tights. She was in the bathroom trying to go and just couldn't get everything out of the way. (She took herself & didn't tell me, so I didn't realize until too late.)

She is every bit as potty-trained as the big kids. Takes herself, rinses little potty & flushes, washes hands, etc. with no reminders. Is it even possible that it could have been this easy???
