#7582, "When and How to start potty training?"

I am hoping someone can give me advice on when to start potty training. Also, how do you train triplets? Right now we are sitting on the potty once a day just to get used to the idea of the potty. So far we have had random success with two out of three girls.

I just can't seem to wrap my head around this issue. Is it better to have all three on the potty at one time or attempt it one at a time? Any advice would be sooo helpful!

We potty trained in the summer outside with a potty chair. They were almost 3 at the time and picked it up really fast. Once one really starts the others will catch on quick. Good Luck!

We started a few months after they turned 2, but if I could do it all over again I would wait until they were closer to 3. I did all 3 at once because my kids seem to always want to do what the other is doing so I couldn't imagine going through that battle of one at a time. Once we finally decided to committ to it, we ran around in underwear all day and went to the potty about every 30 minutes. I bought 3 potties after day 2! It seemed to work best for us. The first 2 weeks were really trying, I thought I was going to go crazy, but it got better! I just recently stopped using pull ups during nap time and we do still use them during night time. I thought potty training while they sleep could be another step!

Good luck!

HI,

I am going to start PT my girls in the next few weeks. What I have read from other moms and moms that I am friends with that waiting closer to 3 or when they turn 3 is a much easier transition. I waited until they were 2 1/2 to transition them to their toddler beds and there was no problems at all. Hopefully PT might be that easy.

We are in the midst of it. We tried several times but got serious about two months ago. Then I started one at a time. I knew one was ready...and she is doing great! The next could hold it but had to learn to let it out. She is doing really good. The third will have the session shut up in the big bathroom with me, lots of liquids, and numerous potties this weekend.

We got on a schedule of sitting on the potty.
They all preferred to pee on a diaper at first...then eventually could do without.
For about the first week afterwards, they go to the potty a LOT...and slowly they get to where they learn they don't have to go right away.
No motivation we could dream up was a big enough incentive until they were ready to go.

The hardest part was getting them to sit on the potty regularly...we broke down and had them sit while watching a Wonder Pets or Thomas episode. Once they no longer need to sit on schedule we will cut back, but it was the only thing that worked for us.

The steps we used,

Talk about it a lot, watch videos read books
Sit on potty occasionally
Tell them that they need to go stand by their potties to pee or poo.
Get them, (all together or one at a time) on a schedule for sitting on the potty at least every 2-3 hours.
Work with them one at a time to get them past the hurdle of peeing while sitting on the potty.

We still have to move on to the poo part...that will be another hurdle...and eventually the overnight training, which I am not in a rush for yet. (since it will mean an end to crib tents)

I am thrilled to say that the third is on her way! She even kept her diaper dry all night! Yippie! I am so happy for them,...and my DH is thrilled for our budget!

Thank you everyone for the advice! I feel so much better hearing that many of you waited until they were closer to three, I was afraid I might miss a window!

Everybody says you finish at age 3, no matter when you start. Did you read my post a few days ago about this? Elise is 3 1/2, and just trained herself. Completely. It was such a non-event it was unbelievable. I gave her panties, and that was it.

If I were doing it again with the triplets, I would definitely wait later! I had to hurry up and get it done for preschool purposes, but it probably wouldn't have been nearly such a horrible experience had I waited a little longer to start. Multiple accidents, frustration all around, visiting the potty everywhere we went, etc. Yuck!

I just finished potty training mine. I went the potty boot camp route. Check out my blog www.hanlinfamily.blogspot.com for more info-most of the February posts are about potty training. It was SO successful, they are all potty trained and even overnight. I was amazed! I did NOT expect it to go so well.

We trained ours at exactly 2 1/2 yrs. old. I used things I liked from reading the book "Toilet Train in Less Than a Day" by Nathan Azrin. and also the Dr. Phil Method found on his website. It's worked with all 5 of my kids that I've trained so far and just takes 3-4 days to master.
Good luck!
