#7848, "Getting out alone with the three"

We have BBG triplets that just turned 1 and I have been with them with minimal assistance from family since they were born. I spent most of last year in the house and only going out when I had someone with me. Now I want to get out more with them, but maybe I am afraid or just not capable. We have a double umbrella stroller that I can link to our single umbrella stroller, but its too wide for shopping or dr appts etc. I do have a bike trailer and just got a bike seat for my bike to help out with that.

If I carry one, it's too hard to guide the double stroller with one hand. If I do have the stroller and strap one to me, how do I ten manage a grocery cart? UNtil they are walking well, does anyone else struggle to take them out to the park or other places?

Just want more things to do with the three little ones, since I am alone with them most of the time. Husbands works a ton and family has been not very helpful.

You need a triple stroller or choo choo wagon. I think they are the only safe and practical ways to take the kids out by yourself. Our Target and grocery stores also have 3 kid carts. I would cruise the parking lots until I found a cart and then park near it. It was nice to be able to load all 3 kids in the cart and still have space for merchandise.

I agree that a choo choo wagon or triple stroller will be your savior. At the grocery store I would push the stroller and pull the grocery cart behind me. The choo choo wagon was great for park and walks and other outdoor activities.

Hi. My triplets are 19 months. At 1 year and earlier I could not trust them to walk around in any sort of way that wasn't dangerous or chaotic in public. I used a triplet stroller for any destination in walking distance and I pushed a double stroller while wearing the 3rd kids in an Ergo carrier if I had to drive to our destination. If I have to take them to the grocery store or on some other retail outing, I still do this because they will just run in three different directions. I never go out on "big" shopping trips with them because I usually just put what I need to buy in the basket of the stroller. I do almost all of my shopping after they go to bed or during their nap on weekends when my partner is home. I suggest taking them to parks or open fields when the weather is nice. This is our main activity. Before they could walk, I would just take them to a park and let them crawl and cruise around. And, now that they are older I just find parks to go to and they play for hours, running around, collecting sticks going on the jungle gym. Although at 12 months I kept them away from the jungle gym because they could climb up it, but would surely fall off of it.

Please feel free to PM me if you want more details on the logistics of taking them out. We go out almost every day and I rarely have another adult with me.

Good luck!

Thank you for all the advice, it helps alot to know that there are options. I was able to get a double umbrella stroller that I have connectors to connect to a single umbrella stroller, though it is pretty wide. I can take my big double stroller out and wear the third child, so I am working around purchasing a triple stroller as they are pricey and money has become very thin for us. It does help immensely that everyone else is doing the same things and I just have to get out more and get more comfortable with it.

Thanks for the advice on the park and it sounds like a great idea. I will try it and get back to you. We do have a large fenced in back yard with a swingset, slide and I bring out toys. We just have a bee issue at the moment and we live about a mile from the lake and a huge park.

Another great suggestion I was given was to get a double stroller and let one walk. That way you can teach one at a time to hold hands and work with them one on one. I did this for each child for 2 weeks at a time for consistency.

We did like some one else said and went to stores taht had shopping carts that would fit 3 (Target and Kroger)! It is expensive, but having a triple stroller really helped us to go places with out help. There is always ebay or craigslist? Good luck! I know it is no fun feeling like you can't go any where!

If Im going grocery shopping then I look for the buggy that has the extra kid part. If I cant find one then I stick all three in the buggy and put stuff in the buggy with them, but I put all items not to be destroyed at the very bottom where they cant reach. Of course, I dont nearly have enough room for everything usually, so I have to prioritize the needs. lol. The other day I took the choo choo wagon down for the first time. It wasnt tooo bad. I put one in the buggy and used just the two car wagon so that it would be a litttle shorter and then I didnt have to attach and remove the third cart. I pushed the cart and pulled the wagon. Was a little awkward at first but its doable.

Like you, we've had minimal to none in assistance, and when one of us has to go out alone with all three it is the biggest of challenges. We had purchased a triple Peg, then sold it because of all the attentioin.... only to end up buying another. We have very few choices in triple strollers where we live, and the Peg is the only one with any real quality to it.

I think the a lot of it depends on where you live, if you are close enough to a park, or other places for kids, that is a huge advantage. By the time we get out of our neighborhood, and in the direction of something besides just houses, we're about ready to head back home.

Do you have any friends with a one-year-old that can go out with you from time to time and can also help with the effort of getting your trio around?

We bought a triple decker that takes the graco snugride carseats and converted it to toddler stroller later. We actually bought it from this sight and we have gotten our money's worth using this stroller. We are still using it and the kids are almost 29months old. It folds up easily and moves easily but is about 60 inches long from back handle to front wheel. We still love it though

I also wanted to add you are SMART to start taking them places now by yourself and getting used to it. I pretty much waited until they were older because of flu and RSV season. Now it's harder and they are getting more active and don't want to sit in the stroller. They are climbing out

Hope this helps! Best of luck!

Like the original poster, I had no help at all with my triplets.

I started taking them out since they were about 6 months old by myself. I had a double stroller and a back carrier. I would put the 3rd child on my back and put the other two in a stroller and walk around the neighborhood for exercise.

The choo choo wagon helped with shopping. I would give the girls stuff to hold while I shopped.

You are going to get attention because you have triplets, unless there are two people and one can take 1 child and the other takes 2.

Now when I take my girls out by myself I let them walk - they are 4 and we got rid of the choo choo wagon. I have to constantly monitor them and it never ceases to amaze me when people want to engage me in the 100 questions while i am trying to keep my eyes in 3 directions, but I know they don't understand that my hands ARE really full, it's not a vague concept.

I was able to get out alone with the help of my runabout stroller. I loved that stroller. I went to the grocery store often because it had a basket. I would strongly recommend looking into this type of stroller. I was on my own often and it is possible to see the outside world. You can do it!

Thanks for all the advice. We do bike/walk daily and we are starting to go shopping more often and learn how to walk holding mom's hand. I do have the backpack animals that have the long tails to hold on to also, so that is our new adventure! Hope it works out.

My suggestion is to get a triplet stroller. Yes, the new ones are expensive but I found mine on Craig's list for 125.00 and I know another triplet mom that got hers at once upon a child for 100.00. So, used ones are out there but you might need some help with the babies while you are looking for one. I would call around before going ot the stores.

I know it's been awhile since your original post...hope you're having an easier time getting out. I think our kids should be about the same age, we're almost 15 months now and I do occasionally get bored enough to venture to the store by myself with them. When I do, I will usually put one in the basket, one in the cart, and wear one (or two in the cart, depending on how much shopping I have to do). Then, I put two little hand held baskets under the shopping cart and put all my groceries in there so the girls can't get to them and smash them

For doctor's appts, I will take the double umbrella stroller and wear the third in an Ergo. I am lucky enough to live near a few parks and lots of walking trails, too. We have a triple jogger which we LOVE, but it is only for walks, not anywhere inside because it's so wide. When I really just need a break sometimes I'll just load everyone up and go through a Starbuck's drive through. that way I don't have to unload everyone and deal with everyone's dumb questions I've been wondering what we're going to do now that fall and winter are approaching...
