#7915, "Getting Rid of Sippy Cups"

We are moving next week and I thought it would be a good opportunity to ditch the sippy cups. First of all, I'm tired of them! They leak, don't keep milk cold so it's always souring and my kids are going to be 4 on Monday. It's time to get rid of them! They have mastered drinking out of regular cups so I'm not concerned.

I need suggestions for allowing them to be able to get their own drinks without calling for me every five minutes. Now I just keep the sippy cups on the bottom shelf of the fridge and they get them on their own. I will go insane if I have to get milk/water/juice for them all day! I also don't want to have to deal with constant spills on their own.

Thanks!

Maybe it's time for a drinks schedule?

We have drinks with breakfast, a "snack" drink mid-morning, drinks with lunch, afternoon snack drink, and dinner drink. Unless something odd is going on, that's it.

My kids are just a few weeks younger than yours and I'm not ready to ditch the sippy cups. My kids do know how to drink out of open cups but I'm not ready for the mess that will cause if they do that full time.

We have a top fridge and the kids do not get their own drinks. Milk never spoils because they only have it with meals. They often want to have the top off the cup and I don't care because it is at the table. I'm sure we will be making the switch to open cups of milk with meals full time in the next few months. I make them a drink of water or watered down juice the first time they ask for a drink during the day. They just keep those cups all day and can ask for a refill if needed.

If they just want a drink of water during the day I give them a small amount in an open cup. My son just figured out how to work the water dispenser on the fridge yesterday so I'm sure that is going to be the new "cool" thing soon. My kids are still a bit short for that, though.

Other than the water dispenser on the fridge there is zero chance they are going to get their own drinks any time soon. The thought of them trying to pour milk or juice makes me cringe!

My babies still use sippy cups, but my 2 year old just switched to these:

http://www.kleankanteen.com/products/classic/klean-kanteen-12oz-classic.html

I keep it filled with water (ONLY water) and out in a place she can reach all day.

She gets milk with meals and snacks, in an open child size cup. The open cup is not allowed to leave the table. She has only spilled a few times.

I'm looking forward to when all the kids can use the klean kanteen. I plan to get a different color for each kid.

Does the klean kanteen sports top leak at all? Because the company says its not leak proof.

Thanks, for sharing I love the idea of the sports top.

It depends what you mean by leak.

The top needs to be popped up in order to drink out of it, when it is popped up it would leak if you dumped it upside down. When the top is closed, they do not leak. You can put it in a bag for going out or a lunch box. My dd figured out quite quickly that this is not a sippy cup (i.e. you can't dump it upside down or throw it across the room).

They do sell a sippy cup spout, but that kind of defeats the purpose of getting rid of the sippy cup, lol.

Well so far so good. I've limited what they can drink and when. Milk is only at meals. Water in a sports bottle the rest of the day in the fridge where they can reach it, or juice at the table during snack time.

It's great not having them all over the house anymore! Thanks for the suggestions!
