#7945, "Why do they pee the second we put on underpants???"

So we've been potty training for a little over a month now. (bbb, just turned 3). When the boys have naked bottoms, they always make it to the potty, no problem. The SECOND we put on underpants, they pee in them!! (Yesterday we went through 4 pairs of undies in 5 minutes. Then I just gave up.) When we leave the house, I've got to do pullups (which I think just confuse them more), but I"m not sure what else to do, since they just pee in underpants! AAAH!!!

I try to keep them naked-bottomed at home, but am starting to get really frustrated! Do you think they just aren't ready? Should I give up and try again in a few months?

Any advice would be greatly apprecited! Thanks so much!!!

One Step Ahead has great potty training pants. They are terrycloth to absorb some of the urine, but still lets the child feel wet. They have a waterproof outer shell with good protection around the leg openings so avoid leaks.

Might be something to check out.

HI,

My 2 girls did that when I first started PT them and I started to put the gerber plastic pants over their underwear and that really started to work. They did not like feeling wet. So I would give them a try. I am not sure if they are really ready but if they are doing well at home they just might need to get used to wearing underwear. I completely stopped the pullups even at night. I think it does confuse them. 2 of mine are done but the 3rd one is a challenge.

Just barely started potty training my boys... but when I was training DD and started getting success bare bottomed, my SIL's advice was to go completely bare bottomed at home for a solid two weeks. Then add back underpants...slowly, after that. Once successful at home with underwear, then switch over going out. Just an aside, my DD had to have one accident at Grandma's and one accident at church before she realized that she had to use the potty if she was out, same as at home. Hope that helps...

PS--I love PT this way (NOT that I love PT!) It works. We've been at it a week, the boys are just shy of 2 1/2 and one of them is already starting to catch on...a little.

OK -- that makes sense!! But during the 2 weeks of bare-bottomness, what do you do if you have to leave the house? First, I go looney being stuck inside 24 hours with them. Second, we have to leave for certain things like speech therapy, music class, etc. Do I just need to suck it up for 2 weeks and get used to cabin fever?

Thanks for the advice!!

Use pullups or whatever you need to do to get out without peeing all over in public. That said, avoid going out. We may have gone places 2 times a week or so during that time period.

Ok, so at age 3 I think this is a great time to start trying…but just so you know I wouldn’t worry about it as long as they are trained by 5 (that’s what most schools require)…I have potty trained many children in the past…ages 16 months to age 3 My opinion is this: Potty training takes full dedication…Once you begin there s no turning back… It is something that not only the boys must be ready for but that you must be ready for as well..get a sitter..call in a family member…but it will work best if you can dedicate a full week to not leaving home…this is extremely hard I know…
Quick tips: Get some books that focus on using the potty, make a star chart, involve washing hands afterwards (that can be a fun reward for some kids), perhaps get a boy doll that they can take potty…
Car rides: if they are a MUST….after the week at home take short trips that do not have time restrictions, take a potty in your car so that if you need to pull over for a potty request you can…go to babys r us…get a peddler…it’s a small plastic cover you put in their car seat that is easy in and easy out to clean… take lots of extra close. They wet their pants they are responsible to clean it…the must climb out of their wet car seat take their pants off wipe down, get dressed and put pee pee clothes in a baggie…
Above all…make sure that even when your at home…if they pee in their pants they need to clean it…that means what could have taken 5 min. to pee, they are now taking 15 min to clean..from putting clothes in a sink and ringing them out to wiping floor up…
Letting them run naked will not help…bc then they will only be potty trained when naked…after a while of cleaning (which I promise will somehow exhaust you more than just cleaning it yourself…) they will get it together and connect the dots…Im telling you it works!!

Just my advice

I hate to do it, but I must really kindly differ, regarding naked potty training. It does work. If you give the child about two weeks in that state (stay 90% at home that way), you will be able to work him with relative ease into regular underwear. I've seen it work personally twice...my DD and one of my trio.

Thank you all for the great advice.

We are finally on the way to being potty trained!

For me, it took what someone suggested -- full dedication, and realizing this would just be my life for a few weeks. Stuck in the house and all.

We stopped the naked potty training (which we had done for a few weeks) and started having them wear underpants all the time. It was a nightmare for a few days, but then all 3 finallystarted to get it. I think starting with the naked potty training was definitely key to getting started. I think maybe I just did it too long, because they were starting to be potty trained only when naked. I probably should have started the transition to underpants sooner.

Two of them are still having a really hard time pooping in the potty, and we are still having pee accidents, but I'm finally taking them out in public, and will feel comfortable sending them to preschool in sept in underpants. YAY!!

Can't believe it took (is taking) so long! Potty training multiples has GOT to be the hardest part of having multiples (versus having a singleton).

Thanks again for everyone's advice!!

I don't know...i about went nuts potty training my DD singleton, and took about 6 months, I think, b/c I had no clue what I was doing. I think the boys are going smoother (got 1 about 80% there and another one about 50% trained, and one not yet started...he will probably be awhile...). I started about 8 weeks ago.
