There's nothing like a sweet cat. Seriously. I never thought I'd be a cat lover, but I am.
I had my sweet boy for nearly 17 years before we had to put him down. He was the sweetest, most gentle animal. It was hard when he got older because he needed some extra love and attention, but for the most part: low maintenance.
I thought I was done after he was gone and then I found myself missing having an animal. I love how my girls took care of him and I think having pets teaches a lot of nice lessons to kids.
So, I hooked up with this agency and met the most awesome lady who literally matched us with a cat. She said she always wanted this cat to go to a bunch of girls. I'm sure it was a bunch of bull, but it was cute.
This cat couldn't be nicer and more loved.
Get a cat. You will love it. And the kids will, too. Try to find an agency where they have foster parents who know the animal well so they can make a good match with you. There's nothing nicer than having an animal who loves kids. And not all of them do, so that's definitely a bonus when you're shopping for your pet.
Good luck. You won't regret it. You may have to vacuum a little more often, but it's worth it.

We recently brought home a cat. The kids allergies flared up, the litter box was so smelly and messy, and my husband refused to let the poor thing out of the bathroom much. Too much maintance for me. We have a boxer though. He's 10 years old, has terrible arthritis but still lets the kids hang on him. He has really sensitive ears, always had cried when someone touches them, but has never come close to hurting the kids when they have pulled on them. He does whine and snips but when he snips he turns his head away, as if he's telling them to stop but doesn't want to hurt them. We always kept a close eye on him in the beginning because I was worried how he would react with his ears and being so old but he's been great! We had 2 other boxers too that were also awesome with the kids. Just too much for us trying to care for 3 babies and 3 boxers so two of our good friends who had been asking about them took one each. One of the boxers is with a family who has two young girls and he's awesome with their girls too. I found having a mess outside was easier for me than a litter box. Part of the problem was the kitty was so little and young my trio was too rough with her, which is why she was banished to the bathroom. We ended up giving her to another family with trips who take better care of her than we did.
So obviously I"m partial to dogs, particularly boxers. : )

My boys got a dwarf hamster. They don't bite. And trust me my 3 year old boys have mangled the poor thing.....I think the hamster has been the best choice thus far. Mary BBB Born 07/01/2007 - Happy Canada Day!
