#828, "time outs not working, how do you disipline?"

My kids used to sit in time out when put there. Now they just run out. I play the game of putting them back in time out over and over again, but really with 4 kids, this gets old fast, I usually wear out before they do. I have on ewho will spend an hour getting out and me putting them back. WHAT DO I DO???? I have been putting them in thier crib for a break when they hit or whatever they have done. I need advise on how to disipline all 4, be consistant and not have to keep putting children back in the corner over and over. Thanks

When time outs don't work, mine get a spank on the butt. I know a lot of people refuse to spank, but this works every time. They need to know they must do what I say and they need to know they can't rule the house.

I also praise them A LOT and make a big deal about it when they do what what I ask them to do, or they are noticed for sharing or being sweet to each other. This seems to help them remember how to act when playing.

DITTO this reply!

The timeout is for the original issue (hitting, deliberate destruction of property, etc)

The spank is for outright rebellion (refusing to sit in timeout). This is the only time I spank - when they are directly challenging my authority. I don't spank for other behaviors.

My DS has been crawling out of our "time-out" pen too. He will stay for a few seconds and then come out with a big smile and say he is sorry. So now I put him in his highchair facing away from us. This has been working except for when they need a time-out when they're eating! LOL!

When mine won't sit in the normal time out spot I bring out one of their old feeding chairs and strap them in there. They haven't figured out how to get out of it yet. I leave it on the floor in their time out spot NOT on the chair or else I would be afraid they might fall, kwim? Do you have anything you can strap them in. Now I can usually just say, "If you won't sit in time out I will have to put you in the feeding chair for time out." and that is enough for them to stay. It's so exhausting!!

I found putting their toys in time out works well too. They can't get up and leave. They are usually more careful when they get their toy back. We used that from about 3 1/2 to now (4 1/2). Now they are starting to stay put a little better and can sit for time out.
