#8371, "Separation anxiety"
|
So my 3 are all about 19 months old and having major separation anxiety whenever we go out and even around the house. lol I went to meet some friends for lunch and they had such a meltdown in the restaurant all screaming "mama mama" and wouldn't even sit in their seats. Any tips. I can pick up 2 at a time but not 3 and I can't stand to be at home all day long. Thankfully I do get out for work at night. 35 weeks 2 days GBB 11/22/09 Bella 4lbs 11oz (7 days NICU) Liam 4lbs 4oz(7 days NICU) Aiden 5lbs 3oz (19 days NICU)

We just kept on with life as usual thinking that would be the best way for them to see that Mommy always comes back. They never cried that way for DH, just for me. I still feel kind of badly for the staff in the nursery at church because whenever our kids are there, they cry a good portion of the hour we're in the service. They call us to come back if it gets really bad, but we think it's important for them to have the experience of being separate from us.
The worst of the separation anxiety phase is behind us, thank goodness, but they'll still cry if a stranger gets too close. We were recently at a party and quite a few of the other guests probably think my kids are a bunch of crybabies, but they kept getting right in their faces (especially while my kids were eating dinner) trying to make nice or something, then they'd make comments about my kids being touchy. My son was crying to be hugged, but I'm trying to be strict about not letting them into my lap while I'm eating, even when it breaks my heart, so I held his hand instead. It worked well and for a few meals after we got home he wanted to hold my hand since we sit next to each other at the table.
Overall my advice is to continue going out with them, just be aware of their limits and tailor your outings accordingly. Also make sure your outings are during the times of the day when they're happiest and calmest. Stick to their regular meal/snack schedule and bring snacks if necessary - mine are more touchy when they're hungry. Mom to GBG born in July 2009 at 30w6d: 3#10oz, 3#12oz, 3#2oz
