#8379, "Not sleeping through the night at 18 months"

Hi,

I am going to come out from lurking to ask....am I the only one with toddlers who still aren't sleeping through the night? Clearly I am doing something (many things) wrong. Or are my kids just difficult? My trio is eighteen months old and they have never (even one of them) slept through the night. I can go a long time without sleep but this is getting ridiculous. Lately one of the babies has been waking up with something that resembles middle of the night temper tantrums so that is adding to the fun. She hits me, pulls my hair, throws her blanket, etc. They are also starting to climb out of their beds! I am a teacher so at least now I don't have to get up at 5am but I would love to have them sleeping through the night by August when I return to work.

If anyone has any advice, please help me!

Info:
I can't let them cry for several reasons. For one, they seem to wake each other up and personally I/dh just can't do it

I tried reading the No Cry book but it seems that a lot of the info would work more with single babies.

They are almost off the bottle except for some VERY watered down formula at bedtime and bottles of water during the night.

I exclusively breastfed my older two dds and we did co-sleeping. They each slept with me until they turned two. They are now 10 and 12 and sleep like logs

I know that CIO may seem harsh but for us it was the answer. The first couple of nights may be rough but after a week or so we didn't have any more issues (they were 7 months old). One may still have the rare fuss in the middle of the night but settles down on their own quickly. Doing the CIO allowed them to learn to sleep through one another. We have a sound machine (on crickets) and we have covered the windows so it is completely dark in their room which was a key factor for mine. Do you have a solid bedtime routine? This helps so they know that this means we are close to bedtime. Ours is simple: wipe faces and hands, get in Pjs and last sippy of the night. I would completely take away the bottles. That may be a reason why you are having some difficulty. Do they take pacifiers? Mine do during naps and at night which helped a lot (they didn't really like them before we did CIO but it helps them self sooth.
As far as crawling out of the cribs, we just started having that issue (mine are 18 months old). We looked at the crib tent option but there is a major recall going on right now and I have heard from several others that it didn't work well for them (some swear by them though). So we have decided to bite the bullet on this one and go to toddler beds this weekend. I don't know if that would work for you right now until you get them STTN though. I wish I had more advice for you on this one but am right there with you.
I hope some of this has helped or given you some ideas. Good luck!
