We just got a new one, a Sony, and, yes, we still use monitors at 4. We have a two story house and a couple acres of land and cannot hear them well when downstairs, in the basement, or outside. The old monitors had static, clicking, beeping and buttons were starting to give out.
Having a monitor is so convenient for us that we will likely keep them for a long time. I especially like the fact the girls don't have to wander around the house to find us when they need us, nor scream loudly to call for us (which always wakes the others up...we have light sleepers).

We have the Summer Infant Day and Night Monitor that comes with the 7 inch LCD screen (we put on the bedside table) and then a handheld unit to carry around. We LOVE it!! The video monitor is invaluable for us. We don't even use the sound portion since we can hear them through our whole house, but it is great if you hear someone cry to be able to look and see if they are laying down trying to fall back asleep, or if they have a limb stuck in the crib. The night vision part even makes their eyes glow green when whey are open. It was a little pricey - $200 on Amazon - but worth it. If nothing else, it is good for entertainment value to see what they do in their crib during "nap" time. We did also have to get an extra camera so that we could get all 3 cribs in view.

In my boys' room I just have it on their dresser and in my daughter's room it is just high on a shelf. At one time I had it mounted high up on the wall. The camera swivels so you can either hang it up or just let it sit on a piece of furniture. Another really neat feature is that you can talk to them over the monitor. Just the other day at nap time my boys were really playing around so instead of going upstairs and then into thier room I just told them to knock it off over the monitor. They get so quiet when I do this because they still can't figure out how I know what they are doing and where my voice is coming from. HTH Stacey

That's a shame it didn't work. I even take my monitor outside with me and still get a perfect signal to the bedrooms upstairs. Sorry it didn't work out for you.
