#8409, "Crib Tents?"

Hello all,

I have GGB triplets that are 22 months old. They greeted us this morning by climbing out of their cribs! (yes, all of them!)

I was wondering if any of you have used crib tents? Did they help you prolong the move to toddler/big beds?

Your thoughts and opinions are appreciated!

Thanks,
Lora

I used crib tents for my (2) boys (my girl never had any desire to climb out ) I loved my crib tents, I was a nervouse wreck with them climbing out of their bed, and they were way too young in my opinion to go in toddler beds.

One of my girls fell out of her crib at about 24 months and we made a big deal about it. They can all climb out but nobody has since the first fell out. They always talk about how she fell out and got a big owie. I'm looking at toddler beds now because I'm not sure how much longer we can convince them to stay in.

We loved them! DS started climbing out of his crib at 18 months. We put the tents on and held off big kid beds until a month or two after they turned 3!

We loved our tents too! We waited until almost 4 to convert to toddler beds. I knew ours would be terrible for an early move to toddler beds, and when we did convert it took around 4 weeks for things to be reasonable in there. There are still times I wish we had them!

One DD started climbing from her crib to her brother's around 18 mo. (quite the party going on at night in their room). We used the crib tent II until the kids were just over 3yo. Toddler beds did not really work well for us (one DD is quite tall) and we switched to twin beds at 3 1/2 and the transition has been easier.

I am a huge fan of crib tents. Below is a link to my post on my blog regarding crib tents. It is too long to rewrite it all on here.

Hi just read that crib tents are being recalled due to injuries and one fatality. Here is the link:

http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml12/12179.html

I'm so bummed too because I was counting on using crib tents when these guys are getting ready to climb out. I'm all about containment & am hoping to keep them in their cribs for as long as possible!! The recalled tents were by Tots In Mind. I wonder if there are other safer models. Anyone know?

Which is worse, your kid falling out of his crib & injuring himself in the fall/roaming through the house or possibly pulling his crib tent on himself? I don't know?

One of my boys started climbing out of his crib at 15 months old! Way too young to have his crib converted to a toddler bed. So we bought a crib tent. It has been a lifesaver!!! We bought it off of amazon and absolutely loved it until we just got the email about the recall. We are devastated because the triplets are just turning 2 and are still not ready for toddler beds. We have no idea what to do now.

Lots of things get recalled because some people manage to not use the product in the correct way. If you have been using it correctly and without incident for 10 months I would continue using them. Maybe it is just me.

My partner has said the same thing- that some people mis use a product and then it gets recalled. My son is an extremely active 2 year old (well he'll be 2 in 10 days) and he hasn't even been able to loosen any part of the tent. We never leave him in it while he is awake and constantly check on him until we know he is safely asleep in it. I still lose sleep over it tho

I hope another company decides to make another crib tent that would be 100% safe. I just got the PeaPod travel tents by OneStepAhead & its totally safe. How hard would it be to make something with the same design or material to fit over a crib?

Maybe this is a product idea to submit to them.....

Actually the peapods are not totally safe. Someone put a baby that was too small in one and the baby rolled over and could not roll back. Their head was wedged in the corner/crevice between the bottom and the dome and suffocation was the result.

Even though there is a warning not to use the item for babies of that age, someone unfortunately did.

Susan

PS, We used peapods, crib tents and drop side cribs for our trio and wonder what in the world will be left for our girls to use when they have children!!

Well we haven't stopped using our crib tent for Aidan and now his brother Matthew is climbing out - about 20 times before falling asleep for nap or bed time and at 5:45 in the morning when he goes to wake the others including his 3 1/2 yr old sister in her room! I am desperate for ideas of how to keep him in his crib- crib tents are not even being sold anymore! Converting his crib to a toddler bed is just not an option right now.

Mine are still only 20 months (adjusted age), but I am terrified for the day when they can climb out of their cribs. You cannot even get crib tents anymore...

Maybe I'm not thinking clearly, but wouldn't just nailing up some wood beams across the top rails of their cribs make the railings taller & make it so they couldn't climb out? My husband's pretty handy. I wonder if anyone has tried something like that.

A friend of my mother-in-law told me that when her boy was little (20 years ago), they would balance a wooden door on top of his crib with a weight on top to keep him in there...now that sounds like they were desperate!

Lol! I can just see that, and the angry mob of people who would call that child abuse... You do what you have to do to keep the child safe. For us that meant crib tents.
