#1335, "Speech and Lang - $$$$$"
|
I know may of you have experience with Speech and Lang. We did a screening for all 3 boys and got a few surprises. The Pre-K said they were fine...just to give it time. Now that they are in K, they had a very basic screening that recommended a full workup for two of my kids. A full work up is $270 per kid, and then therapy is $90/week per kid for 2 sessions per week. Given the fact that we are completely stretched because we are paying for private school, there is no way we can add that to our expense! We chose private because our public school here is horrible, and we would have to move or get a transfer...neither is easy to come by at this point. What were we thinking!!!
I want to do what is necessary to help them succeed, but this seems impossible. I have spent the day calling other resources, but their waiting list is 4-6 months, and the cost is really not that much less. The beauty of going with the therapy at their school is that she comes to the school and works closely with the teachers to make sure that the teachers are working with the students too. She also does her schedule around the teacher's schedule so they wouldn't miss "special events" blah blah blah!
Does anyone know of other resources?
This is killing me!

Even though the public school is terrible, maybe they can help with the speech therapy.
Is there something your DR can do? Dawn

You may want to check with insurance. It will sometimes cover speech therapy. We have one in public school's speech program but it's a very good school. You could try the public school, maybe they have an ok speech teacher or could at least point you to other resources. I think here the public school will even send the speech person into the private schools if necessary.

I am pretty sure the public school still has to provide speech therapy if it is called for -- even if your kids are in private school.
The kicker is...YOU have to get your kids to the public school for the therapy sessions...they don't have to come to the private school and of course the private school doesn't have to transport the kids for therapy.
Some private schools will work WITH the public school to make this all happen and some won't. And to get the public school to give the services, you have to go through the whole IEP evaluation and process. BBB born 7/26/04 at 35 weeks

Hi Stephanie,
I am not sure if you live close to or have a local university nearby that has a speech-language program, but if you do, I highly recommend you call them to have the assessments (and possible) therapy conducted there. It's usually very low cost (or on a sliding scale), and honestly, you are getting therapists who are being overseen by very knowledgeable professors in the field. As a bonus, your kids could get to work with the latest and greatest technology. Since your kids attend a private school, they still are in a local public school district, and should be able to receive some sort of SLP services (since you pay taxes!). The only catch is that you may have to drive them to and fro- but it's usually worth a gallon or two of gas. Definitely call your local public school district, and check to see what your kids might qualify for.
All the best, 7mozz
