#1355, "What age best for Bunk Beds? And what brand?"

My boys have been asking for Bunk Beds since they could talk, so I am wondering: What age is best (safest) for little boys. (Mine are 6 and they know it will come with a big set of rules!)
Also, what brand did you buy? I saw La-z-Boy had a cool 3 bed set-up. 2 twins over a full in a corner configuration. Any of you have this one?
Thanks much,
Camille

I don't have any suggestions but an interested in other peoples experiences.

My boys turned 6 over the summer and DH and I were recently talking about setting their bunk beds up. Right now I have the beds seperated, but it would be nice to stack them and get more space in the room (we could really use another dresser).

I'm still on the fence as to whether they are old enough or not.

We've been talking about it too. We'll have to ditch the ceiling fan though and we aren't sure that is a good idea. It gets so hot here.

My kids are almost 6 and I would totally trust my girls to be safe with Bunk Beds. My boys would jump off the top bunk and ride the fan as soon as I left the room!!!!

We got ours last winter right after the boys turned 7. We just have the two boys and I had planned on getting them a twin over full. We ended up really liking the Maxtrix bed - handrail on stairs, very sturdy, lots of room btw top & bottom bunk, etc. In the end we got a full over full and LOVE it! The nice thing with having at least one full bed is that it is so much easier when they want to sleep together.

Mine sleep widtwise across the bottom bunk most of the time and it works well - there is plenty of room for a third if we'd been lucky enough to have their brother with us.

There are a few cool bed sets with two high & one low - I really liked those too. Just make sure the ladders work - a lot of times the photos and floor displays are not realistic for real bedrooms.

Here's a link to one like ours. Our ladder is on the other side, though. I love that they will each have a full size bed down the road. If you go to the Maxtrix site you can see many different ways to put their bed components together.

Is this similar to the one that you saw?

A couple of things to look into: Weight limit on top bunk as well as whole bed. Measure the distance from the mattress of the bottom bunk to the bottom of the top bunk - dh & I can sit upright on the bottom bunk of our boys' bed without hitting our heads - many of the beds we looked at were much closer than this and that would stink - and make it difficult to change sheets.

How are the mattresses supported - I believe that a slat system is the most secure.

Try the bed out - have some one get up on top and watch from the bottom. See if the bed is stable with a kid (or 2, or 3) on top. How is it if you or dh get up on top.

Food for thought!

Marie
