I got word today that our kids' kindergarten teacher is quitting on 12/01. Man, what a blow!!!! I didn't see this one coming. She was so incredibly good. Soooooooooo how was the transition for others who have lived through the mid-year change? What do we get now? Someone from the surplus who was too new or too stupid to get hired beforehand? Tell me. I can take it.

I once had a teacher go on maternity leave, so had an extended sub. The next year that teacher was hired full-time. She was one of the best teachers I recall EVER having.

My girls were split 2x2 for K. One teacher is within a year or so of retiring. The other was in her 2nd or 3rd year of teaching and she was moved from 1st to K. BOTH teachers were wonderful, brought their own perspective, and my girls had a VERY good experience.

You might just get someone with fresh ideas and enthusiasm.

About two weeks before beginning of this school year, the 3s teacher from our preschool was jogging and blew out her knee. She was absolutely the best teacher EVER. She had been a 1st grade teacher in her prior lifetime, but was doing this now since she has little kids. The doctor told her that she had to have surgery, then would be in rehab for 2 months. So she had to resign. They replaced her, and I just heard that she is fully recovered and just got hired by the school system to take a kindergarten class. Apparently they had higher enrollment than expected, so they added a class.

Anyway, she is a phenomenal teacher and started late. So maybe that will happen to you!!

That sucks...I'd be upsert too! We've been lucky with our teachers, but from talking to the parents of other kids in our school that have been through it, it has been much harder on the parents than the kids. It's annoying for the parents to have to build a new relationship with the teacher, the kids adjust quickly. I also wouldn't worry about getting one of the "rejects". It's hard for teachers to break into a school district. Just because they didn't have enough "clout" or stand out enough to get hired at the beginning of the year, doesn't mean they aren't fabulous teachers.

Good luck!!

My friend is a teacher in Milwaukee and wanted to work at a specific school, but she had to wait for an opening for over 2 years. Maybe that's what's happening?

Wow, that does suck especially if you and your kids loved her.

Is the school keeping you updated on the hiring process?

I'm sure they're going to replace her with someone equally qualified and good and your kids will adjust.

But, yeah. I'd feel sucker punched, too.

Thanks for the positive thoughts guys. I am a pessimist about it because the morning class has 32 kids in it, half of whom don't speak English. My kids are lucky enough to be in the afternoon class which "only" has 24. I am just trying to imagine who would "fight" to be so lucky as to get that morning class. KWIM?

I'll cross my fingers........

Yeah. No kidding. There would have been more like 40 if I hadn't fought the district on the rezoning. Even so, the rezoning shifted our demographics and added about 15 kids to her morning class that have to bused in and they only bus in the mornings.

I'm going to ask her today if that is why she took a different job.

Wow that stinks! Do your teachers have assistants with that many kids in one class? I sure hope so! That's a LOT of kids for one teacher!

Speaking about the ratio, my girls' class has 19 children and 2 teachers and I volunteer once a week and I see it first hand that they really need extra help sometimes. It just makes things easier.

It's a beautiful climate and the kids are totally well behaved, but when they get done with an activity and want it checked, it can be hectic.

And that's just one aspect. Factor in kids who need help with bathroom time, instruction, serving snacks...

No. She does not. Nevada poorly funds kindergarten. It is not a federal requirement, so they don't care how many kids are in there. We only have a 2.5 hour class too. The only reason I don't go stark raving mad all the time is because my kids are so far ahead, I am not actually worried if they are learning anything. They actually seem to really enjoy it. Of course, they don't anything else.

Next year, federal law kicks in and we can't have more than 18 kids in a class. We just have to get through kindergarten. Navigating the public school system has been so bizarre. I go to all the board meetings just to get a handle on how all this funding stuff works.
