#1594, "Does this warrant a letter to the teachers?"
|
My DD just got glasses. She loves them. She's super cute in them so there's really been no issues.
Well. A little girl in her class told her she looked better without them.
LOL!
I'm laughing at the bluntness, but really. It's a teachable moment, right? I mean. I wouldn't want my kid saying that to other kids.
My question is: should I write a little head's up letter to the teachers for them to keep an ear out for this kind of talk so they can politely diffuse it? Or do I just blow it off?
And I guess she said it again. So, I'm like: OK, kid. Enough with the ripping on my little kid with the glasses!

As a former teacher, I would suggest letting the teacher know this is occurring. Helping kids learn about diversity is important in today's schools. It's an opportunity to talk about acceptance and respect. Depending on the age, the teacher could read a story in which someone was teased or was the recipient of an insensitive comment and then lead a discussion on the topic. All of us have been in this position at one time or another and feelings can range far and wide. I think the teacher would appreciate knowing about it and can handle it in such a way that your daughter is not singled out.

I would - but I would also work on building your daughter up at home because from now until she gets contacts kids will say stupid stuff. So long as she feels good about herself it will roll better off of her back.

I ended up emailing a little note. Just as an FYI for the teachers and to keep their ears out for anymore talk like this.
I guess this little girl told another little girl she didn't want her to sit next to her.
So. I'm thinking this kid could use a little talk about being nice...
Haven't heard back from the teacher and I hope I'm not acting like it's a big deal. My DD seems to be unaffected by it; in fact, we've had our own little teachable moment lecture and it was really cute and helpful.
The girls were like: She needs to say Put Ups and not Put Downs!
That's darn right!

P.S. Terri, keep on top of the Anthony situation, too! He better step off our little Haylie! My other DD has the same R talk, too. She's like: My toy ca is out in the yad.

I have been volunteering in the classroom almost every day for 2 weeks, and I have to tell you that five year olds are MEAN. Whoa.
You just have to help them develop a thicker skin. I would have told my child to say, "Well, I do sit next to you, so you better get used to it."
In just one day, my daughter was stabbed with a pencil twice, then pummeled when some hyper kid ran into her and knocked her down. Then another girl told her she didn't want to be her friend. I was there to see it ALL. Sheez. Michele Sarah, Gregory, Amanda born 1/22/04 at 35w1d
