#2445, "How will you spend the summer???"
|
Just thought it might be fun to share some ideas of what we will all be doing this summer. Gotta say, I'm a little nervous about keeping them busy the next few months now that they are used to all day school. We do have a short trip and a longer one planned this summer. That will bring it down to only 6 weeks of free time. Our library has some fun programs over the summer so hopefully that will help fill the days. Oh, and we have plenty to get organized around the house and to get ready for the fall. I'm sure summer will be over before it begins.
Would love to hear everyone's plans.

1. Lots of playdates at the water parks. We have great rec centers here, with giant slides and tons and tons of water features.
2. Library stuff. Lots of shows and arts and crafts.
3. Free movies at Regal. Check your area.
4. We always spend time walking around all the casinos in the a/c and usually do one day trip to Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, Venetian, Forum shops, etc.
5. Swimming. Swimming, Swimming.
6. Swim classes.
7. Vacation. We will be gone the whole month of June.
8. Homeschooling. Gotta keep them from losing their knowledge.
9. Hiking on Mt Charleston. You have to go up to 10,000 ft to find suitable weather to be outside.
10. I just signed the boys up for a basketball skills class and the girls for dance for August.
Whew. I still don't think we will survive. When it is 115 degrees here, it is brutal. Michelina

I have a few things lined up, but I was careful not to overdo it. I wanna have some downtime.
One kid craves a little theater class since she's such a ham.
Everyone is doing a three day art class at the end of this month.
Everyone is doing a three day nature camp to learn about frogs, birds and plants in July.
Everyone is doing a karate class in August right before school starts.
DH and I will take them to Cedar Point, an amusement park near us.
And a little bit of island hopping on Lake Erie.
And just like our new member is doing, a lot of little homeschooling sessions and swimming, too.

We are signed up for swimming lessons, The Little Gym, and ballet on a weekly basis. And PT & OT, obviously.
I have two homeschooling books I am going to try & combine "Galloping the Globe" and "Five in a Row", to do a gentle sort of geography/literature thing.
Also, we are going to start back at point zero and try reading again, this time with "The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading" and the games from "Phonics Pathways". I have swore to myself that no matter what, no more than 10 minutes at a time so we don't get burned out on it!
I also have Handwriting Without Tears to work through.
If they seem interested, we may try Mona Brooke's Drawing With Children book. I'm not sure they are quite ready for that yet.
We usually go to the sprinkler park / pool several mornings a week to meet friends.
We usually do library story-time each week as well.
One week of Vacation Bible School at our church. I have a friend who sends her kids to VBS at several different churches in town so she can have some free time and they have something fun to do.
We have talked about a martial arts school called The Peaceful Dragon, but it's pretty expensive, so that probably isn't happening.
I wanted to do Lil Kickers (intro soccer skills), but they only have a class on Saturdays, and we go to the lake most weekends so that isn't in the cards.
I had also hoped that Music Together would offer the class for older kids and not just the toddler set, but no such luck!
Unfortunately, most of the kids' activities in town do camps instead of once-a-week classes. I just am not going to blow our entire summer budget on one week of camp, and then be bored the rest of the summer. I would much rather do something for an hour here, something else for an hour there. But I'm in the minority around here, so there aren't too many options. BGG born 4/25/05 at 31w1d

I make my kids read each day. They do this to earn video game time. They also have to work on their math skills and writing. I plan on doing this after we wake up, eat breakfast and lounge a bit each morning. We have a great pool for our subdivision, which we plan to go to a lot. I have a membership to the science place here we will use and our local bowling place is doing kids bowl free (you rent the shoes though.) We will do that some too. All the kids are in karate year round, so that will continue. We will work on some more of my older boy's cub scout stuff and try to go camping once more before summer is out. The last two weeks of July, we are going to DC, Raleigh and Atlanta. Cindy Paul and Andrew Kristen, Rachel and Michael

Wow, my summer plans are so boring compared to all of you! My family has a summer place on a lake, and we pack up and move over there for the summer. My husband works from home, so we can just move over there and still have daddy with us every day.
We will do some day trips to friends houses and have family visit us as well. That is it. Dawn

That sounds heavenly to me. I'll just be here in the desert, trying to avoid third degree burns when I put my seat belt on.
I am sitting in my quiet house right now, enjoying the very last minute of silence for the next THREE MONTHS that I will have. Michelina

i haven't logged in since before school started, i really need to update my signiture since the kids have all had birthdays. we also do programs at our library along with their reading program where they get small prizes for every 2hours that they read.
we also have a y membership, and have signed them up for swimming lessons. i checked and the child care will let the girls come for a couple hours while i work out even though they are 7. we also play in the gym, or take a beach ball into the racquet ball room when it's not busy, and the girls love the mirrored wall in the room they use for zumba classes.
new for us this year is mini 4h, they can start as 1st or 2nd graders, they each have 2 projects to work on,they chose foods, sewing, and whales and dophins. then the fair will be in july. they go through a workbook, then make a simple project or poster. they also have 2 meetings a month. our group also has crafts and games for preschoolers while the older kids are meeting.
we also volunteer at the animal shelter. they can go as long as i am with them. we walk dogs, play with kittens and puppies, brush them. we actually started to help the kids overcome their fear of animals, and eventually adopted a dog. the people working there are very nice and sincerely care about the animals, but can't give them a lot of attention.
3 more days and school is out, yah! jen- mom to leah, lynnette and lorraine 28w2d

Advanced swimming lessons at the pool for all dds
Piano lessons the month of June for all dds
Free enrichment classes (fun courses like fun science and art) for 2 weeks in June for the triplets and 10 year old dd
Free orchestra camp for 3 weeks in June for my 12 year old
Boys and Girls club a couple of times a week for all dds
We'll probably head to the beach, waterpark, and aquarium one or two weekends this summer.
First week of July we will be visiting relatives in Rhode Island and meeting up with triplet friend in NY. When we get back from NY, more of the boys and girls club and swimming.
Possibly send my dds to a Spanish language camp in late July or 1st week of August but still not sure about that
Also, my 13 year old niece will be staying with us all of June, and my 15 year old niece will visit us for a few days at the end of June.

We are all heading home to my country (UK) for the summer. the triplets have a long beak since their preschool holidays started the end of May and they are not going back in July, the will move to K1 at their older siblings school. That school breaks middle of June and restarts mid August - so the triplets will have 2 1/2 months. I am working with them at kindergarten readiness. I will work on the other two as well, but generally I am looking forward to a lot of quiet hanging out and a lot of outdoor playtime (it won't be as hot) and a lot of time with family.

Hillyt mom to Ian 12 Ella, Holly, Jilly 6 Hadley 3
Five mornings a week the four big ones have swim practice. By the time we get through both age groups, and breakfast, it is lunch time.
Between 2 meets and 2 baseball games/week there are the evenings.
We are practicing math facts each day, and reading. We go to the library, see all the new movies, and I am teaching them how to do new cleaning chores every week. (nothing like a kid who can vacuum stairs and clean toilets!)
At the the end of this month, we go to family camp in Michigan. It is a week of family time in cabins on Lake Michigan. No cooking, no cleaning, no TV, just rock climbing, hikes, swimming, kyaks, crafts, games, and other camp activities. It is sponsored by our church, and is the most affordable week-long trip ever. Best part--no place to even spend any money.
I have to admit, I was dreading summer, but so far it has been a lot of fun, and nice to have later bedtime, and NO homework!!

This summer will be CRAZY here. I will spend most of it in my car. We had this first week of summer break off to do nothing. Thankfully because I got ill. Next week we have our days but the evenings my son goes to a Boy Scout Twilight camp every night and the 3 girls go to VBS 6-8
Week after that they all have horse camp from 7am-6pm
A week off
Then we have out of town guest for a week. My brother, SIL and their older son and twin boys.
Back to horse camp for another week. Cousin is staying to go with them. He right in the middle in age between my trio and singleton.
The next week the girls go to Girl Scout camp (sleep away camp) for a week and Son goes to Atlanta with cousin for a week. Well youngest girl is only going to camp for 3 days. But DH is taking those 3 days off. Mini vaca for us.
They all come home for 3 days them I am taking my entire Girl Scout troop camping for a week.
Then home for a week and school starts Aug 12th.
School starts entirely to freaking soon here don't you think?! Insane! It shouldn't start until Sept if you ask me. We need a MUCH longer summer. I need MORE TIME!

Oh and if you are looking for inexpensive thing for you kids to do and their age have you checked out vacation bible schools? I had a friend from our multiples club who sent her girls to a different church almost every week in the summer. LOL It was funny. But one or even two would help break up your summer. Most are free and do little crafts. They just last a few hours and you can pick a morning or evening one. We don't belong to a church but have a friend who wants the kids to come to her church so we are going there this year. We haven't done VBS for a couple years though. They enjoyed it when they were younger though. Tasha Have children afraid of monsters or just looking for a fun kids app? http://www.goawaymonster.com/
