Do your little boys' privates get chapped / chafed when they run around for long periods of time in wet swimsuits? (Like when you are at the beach or lake for the day.) My poor son couldn't walk one day last summer! Solutions?

We haven't had this problem yet this year, but it happened a LOT last year, and he had several different suits. I think they all fit OK.

We've had the problem on beach trips. We just put Vasaline on them before hitting the beach each day. It has worked well.

Ah - Vaseline - gotcha. At what age do they take over application themselves? Or is this one of those situations where I am going to know when the time is right? ACK! I can't believe I'm having to ask about this! I'm so embarrassed!!!

My son is a swimmer, so he is used to having a jammer (longer version of speedo style racing suit) on, and when he wears a pair of trunks it chaffes. He usually wears a jammer under the trunks to keep the friction down. If it gets bad you could try that style instead or under.

We cut out the mesh liner and either let them go commando or let them wear their undies under them instead. That works!

I have never heard of such. I had to ask all they guys around here to see if anyone has ever had an issue since several of you seem to have an issue. We have family that own houseboats or cabins on the lake so when they aren't working they and their kids basically live at the lake and in their bathing suits. I had to ask them because I thought maybe it was an untreated water thing since you specifically asked about the beach and lake. none of them had heard of this issue. Is this really that common? All the mens/boys suits we have ever bought dry so quickly. Much more quick than girls suits. Or maybe they just have balls of steal around here from being in their suits so much. Not that those of us in the city are in our suits that much. Just the pool unless we drive down to visit the lake.

My boys have only complained about when we are on vacation at the beach. Maybe the sand or salt water contribute to the problem(?).

Yes -- I think the sand/salt is very abrasive and definitely contributes to it!

I would say sand and the bacteria in certain lakes can exacerbate the problem.

Look at me whippin' out the vocab, LOL....

I would either do the vaseline thing, the undies (minus the mesh) suggestion OR you can buy boys' biker shorts to put underneath swim trunks. They're made to stay put on the legs and allow moisture to flow through.

We use Boudreaux Butt Paste for that, and the kids can apply it themselves - can't remember how old they were but let him try and that will tell you!

Even Daddy uses the Butt Paste from time to time. We buy the little trial sizes they can keep in their pack and we can refill from the large jar. Works like a charm.

Gold Bond powder works too although it can be a little more "tingly" - and harder to apply.

One of my boys has one particular bathing suit that chafes him so badly right above his privates that he was in tears. It happened 2-3 times after only an hour of swimming. This swimsuit doesn't have a liner (long board shorts) but it does have a flap inside near the fly area that I think is the culprit.

Vaseline is a good idea. I hear that runners use that while running long distance to stop chafing. The best part is that it won't come off easily in water.
