#261, "Update on Giving my ADHD child meds...."

I decided to do it and OH MY GOODNESS!!! My 6 year old is nearing 7 and we have struggled with her ADHD since she was turning 3. WE have taken classes, we have been to her reg. ped. and then a specialist, PLUS a sleep specialist and so many other things the past 4 years.
She has gone to special classes at school to help show her how to focus and calm down and treat others right (she does not understand why kids do not want her hugging and kissing them all the time).
We have done so much, she was even put on the c-pap machine for a sleep disorder and tried taking red dye out.

ALL of the things we did helped, a LITTLE.
BUT.....

The meds seem to have helped her. I said for YEARS I would NEVER medicate my child but thank GOD people on TC and others got me to at least TRY IT.

She is on medatate 10mg every morning. She does not even know she is taking it. We have not told anyone (well except for her girl scout leaders because they have dealt with it and we are friends and I needed someone to talk to about it, I am a girl scout leader as well).
Now at home I notice 0% difference then before.

She takes this at 7am every morning hidden in what I call her Peanut Butter BITE. It is a treat she gets every morning for being good the day before! I did not tell her teachers or my parents, NOBODY!

She goes to school from 7:30am-2:15 and we started her on Monday dec. 1st.
They go on a color system. Green means good, yellow can improve, red is not a good day at all and blue is BAD.
Usually she would come home on yellow, with a few greens like maybe 1 a week IF that, sometimes reds and maybe 1-2 times a month a blue.

Well monday the 1st (her 1st day) she had a yellow, tuesday green, wed. another yellow and EVER SINCE THEN......

GREEEEEENNNNNNN!!!!

She has never been on green so much in her life.
My mother (who picks her up from school) says that something has changed.
By the time I get her around 4pm she is her reg. self because it has been 9 hours and it only last about 6 hours. I dont care though, she is doing GREAT in school.

I cant wait till after the break and she goes back. I am going to give her a few more weeks of not telling her teacher and then tell her. Her teacher is wonderful and has already said how amazed she is that she has been so well for over 2 weeks straight!

I really though meds would not work, but they are! How happy and yet sad I am all at the same time. I HATE meds, but they are HELPING her, not hurting.

sorry for typos, super busy and running late so no time to check.

I am so glad to hear this Brooke! I can tell when my ds's meds wear off also...but his apetite picks up and that's a good thing for my little string bean!

Keep us updated on her further progress and what her teacher says after break.

Take care!

oh and thats another great thing.
Her appetite is the same! NO decrease!
I think because she is on such a low dose is why. It is the lowest dose.
She is a tad more moody.

I have not been giving her meds to her on sat. and sun. and while the doctors are ok with that they mentioned that on mondays and tuesdays the side effects may be worse because of it. Well those are her VERY VERY MODDY days. She can cry if the wind blows the wrong way, but only moody after the meds wear off. SO I might try letting her stay on them every day.

To get the best effect you really should have her on a consistent schedule daily.

Ds missed his meds for a whole weekend away with a friend. Bad mommy forgot to pack them for him, even after HE reminded ME!LOL!
Anyway, he was pretty touchy on that Monday also.

Congratulations! I'm glad you're having success with the meds. I've often found it interesting that parents are so afraid to medicate their kids when they have gone the route you have, done the back up work to make sure that meds are truly a last resort and perhaps best option. If your child had diabetes you'd have no problem giving her insulin and following all of the other protocols. ADHD is no different when properly diagnosed and treated, it sometimes calls for the use of meds. I'm happy for both of you.

I want to see if the teacher notices a difference 1st.
At the beginning of the year we had a teacher parent conference (actually the like 7th day of school!) and I told her how we were not doing meds, that maybe down the road yes but not right now. She couldnt blame me. She did not bring up meds, I did.

BUT as I was leaving she said that if I ever do try meds to not tell her for a few weeks so she could see if she notices a difference. She said 1 parent did that. She had no idea they went with meds and after about 2 weeks she ran up to the mom and said I dont know what you are doing at home but this kid is a totally different kid!

SO she wants to see it without knowing.
I want everyone to see it without knowing.
I am having the HARDEST time not telling my mom, I tell her EVERYTHING. The other day she said Brooke, Thalia has changed, something finally clicked with her, I guess we just needed to let her grow out of it. I still kept my mouth shut because if I tell my mom I tell everyone, lol!
