#2985, "All 3 eat the same, have same activity level (pretty mu..."

She has always been "rounder" than the boys, but i just want her to be healthy. We talk about healthy amounts of food, exercise and play and she is in soccer along with the boys, but she has a major gut whereas on the boys i can count their ribs!

Is it just a girl thing? She has friends who are thinner and chubbier, so i have no idea what the deal is. We do NOT each junk food at all (pizza MAYBE once a week if that). No fries, chips, sodas or sweets. She loves veggies, hates cheese.

Help! any advice? Her dad is paranoid she will become obese and i don't want her to be the "chubby kid" because children are so mean to each other at school.

What is her BMI?

http://pediatrics.about.com/cs/usefultools/l/bl_bmi_calc.htm

You can enter her age, height, and weight, and it will tell you if she is overweight or has a healthy body mass index.

I have no advice Amy, I am sorry. What does the pedi say?

I just wanted to say HI!!! Haven't "seen" you in so long! How is everybody (other than DD's gut)? What grade are they in now? My kids just started 4th grade if you can believe it!

I think this is a tough thing for girls. One of my DD's is on the petite side. Her sister who is less picky has a more well-balanced diet but is on the chunky side. She looks a few years older than she is because of her height(there are only 2 or 3 kids taller in the 2nd grade class) and has now started to look a bit chubby.

When I look around I see a lot of girls that are in a sort of ackward stage between having a kid body and getting hips, etc. She has noticed that she's bigger than other kids and even calls herself fat. I'm not sure what to do about it. I am scared that she will end up with an eating disorder later if we bug her about her size now; but also know that she realizes she could lose some weight. The PA at the ped. office just said to be more active and eat healthy foods; but really need to talk to the real dr. at her 8-yr. check-up.

Oh, and my sister was one of the bigger kids in her class and also struggled with her weight. She said our parents were always making her feel bad about what she weighed. She grew up into a normal size 20-something....though gained wt. later due to other issues. I think what's most important is having a good self-image no matter what size you are........of course, I don't want to have her dealing with being chubby in school either.....

Ugh,
Let me know if you find a solution,

I feel your pain,

Andi

P.S. I also think that some of it's just genetics....maybe the boys got better genes in that dept?
