It has been a long time since I have posted on TC but I hope someone will offer some insight.I have to be non descript as to which one it is as they all read wonderfully & love to read what I type!
One of the trio is struggling in math, technology, and expressive writting. It has been suggested that we hold this child back. I am very strongly against this. I am afraid that if we were to hold this person back it would adversly affect the child for the rest of its life. Am I worrying to much? The child is immature but is making strides in the right direction. I think that if we keep working with them and give lots of support/enchoragement it will be okay.

I would do everything I could before deciding to hold the one back. Paid tutors, tons of extra support at home and school. Even look into possibly testing for school support thru an IEP (SPED). I can't imagine the two moving on and the one staying behind...that's just me. Best wishes! A very tough decision! Agapi

In no way would I hold all 3 back because one is struggling. I also would try to find any way to keep all 3 at the same level. I'd probably hire a tutor. The research on holding back can be very confusing, but in my district we RARELY ever hold back. The only time it is really suggested (which is almost never) is when maturity is an extreme issue and a student struggles with relating to peers or age appropriate behaviors (but if progress is being made then it sounds like the strategies you doing are working - maybe not as fast as you'd wish, but still working). With academics holding back doesn't necessarily help. BAsically the child ends up doing the same material, but if it didn't work the first time doing the same exact thing again won't really help. What most struggling students need is a different approach. That's why students on IEPs go at different paces, have different intervention strategies, more small group and individual instruction.
Not that holding back is necessarily bad, but if you are not comfortable definitely listen to your gut. Jennifer GBG 2/20/2007 @29 weeks

Hi Sam.
I hope you've gotten some answers and seen some progress with your child since your post.
I wanted to add, too that you can totally get your kid up to speed on your own. It might be a challenge especially with how busy life can be, but you can totally be your child's tutor.
I would ask the teachers, if you haven't already, exactly what areas need reinforcing and you can do it!
Is it basic facts, site words, ordinal numbers, subtraction? Whatever it is, get the feedback from the teachers so you can plan your lessons. Ask for specifics and go from there!
You can be your kid's teacher!
And get some good supplemental books from Kumon. (There's a store in Sylvania.) Your kid will LOVE these activity books.
Jump Start has an awesome educational CD that might be a lot of fun, too. (Target) Pop it into the computer and sit side by side and play and learn.
Good luck. Just wanted you to know you can do this on your own. You really can get this kid caught up so that maybe you don't even have to consider repeating the grade.
