I am an over planner and I obsess about things long before I need to. That being said, I am thinking about Kindergarten and I am wondering if kids have homework when they are in kindergarten. If so, what is it like? Thanks Dawn

hi!
my kids are in K and just turned six last week. they are in public school. i have been shocked but they do not have homework. they do bring home a book that they keep for a few days then when they go back to school they take an AR test. only 5 questions. that being said, they are all reading as well as writing in sentences. i think every school is different though when it comes to homework.

My girls are in prk 5days a wk. Once a wk they bring home a first time reader book that they have to read and bring back the next day. I have a slip that I have to check off and initial and send it with them. I think that's great that they are teaching them to read but come on they are only 4and5 yr olds and in prek. I can only imagine what next yr will be like in K.

mine are in K and they do not have homework. They do have a math problem solver once a week that is "optional" and we usually do it, but its like a word problem, and totally over the heads of my kids, so i think its pointless. anyway, sometimes they bring home a worksheet that they didn't finish at school and we do it at home as "homework" but nothing is required in their classes. Mine are in full day kindergarten and have homework about 3 nights a week. It's usually 2-3 pages of phonics, vocabulary lists, numbers, sequence exercises and/or practicing letters. All fun stuff. Only takes about 1/2 hour, 45 minutes max. What I do that works well is have them all sit down while I'm making dinner and they do it at the dinner table. We also read every night before bed. You'll be amazed how much they learn at this age. The homework is really not a lot of work for the parents at this age. Believe me, I was like you and stressing about it, but find it's a nice quiet time with them! Mine are high energy, but they are serious about their homework. I still can't believe they all sit still that long! Also, use it as an incentive, "If you get your homework done, you can play Wii for 15 minutes, or watch cartoons, or whatever."

Thank you all for your replys. I am driving my husband crazy trying to figure out how I am going to handle everything. He thinks I plan to much, but the thought of letting my kids out of my site for 8 hours a day and then trying to fit in everything that needs to be done in just a couple hours after school. Dawn

Terri,
I am actually completely freaked out about them going to school. I have never left them with strangers, and now I am going to have to do that, and I don't even get to choose who the stranger is. They are going to have so many other things/people influenceing them. I keep telling my husband that they are going to have to physically remove me from their classroom the first day. LOL I am excited for them, but not excited for me. Dawn

Hi,
My kids started kinder this past fall and they have a homework packet most weeks that they are given on Monday and have to turn in on Friday. We are also supposed to read for 20 minutes every night. I work full time so they go to after care from 3-5:15 and I am very lucky that they do an hour of homework at after care. Otherwise, there is no way I would have time to work on it with them.
Even though I was getting them up and out of the house everyday to a sitter, it was still a huge ajustment for me with school, just as another poster mentioned. It took weeks for me to get the routine down. I couldn't belive how different it was than taking them to the sitter. It's just different for some reason.
The first day of school for me was just so overwhelming with all the people and getting the ton of stuff that you have to supply to the classroom that I didn't have time to get upset. Our school does what they call a "Boo Hoo Breakfast" for the kinder kids and their parents the first day of school. You can stay a few minutes longer and have breakfast with your kids. That helped. My kids are all in the same class this year too, and that made it MUCH easier to leave them there with complete strangers. I have to say I had a much worse time the second day of school. The hubub of the first day was gone and I had to just leave them playing on the playground before school started (had to get to work) and trust that they would not run away, get taken by someone and get to class on time. I have never just left my kids on the playground before and driven away. I had a really hard time with that. But, that's what 99% of the parents do and now it's easy for me. I also now know there are teachers watching them. I didn't see them that second day. I have to say, the kids and parents grow so much so quickly in kindergarden. It's amazing.
Good luck to you!

indergarten is a whole other world. My kids have HW mon - thursday nights - a page or two of writing word wall words three times each, spelling sentences, math problems, etc plus a page of reading. Sometimes there are TWO sheets (each). Thankfully they are all in the same class, and at this point in the year they can do the work pretty independently, but I won't lie. It is hard work at the beginning of the year!!! Ali formerly aliandbob DS 7/2001 BBBs 7/2003 DS #5 coming soon!
