OK, so it is starting to hit me. After 5 years of having the kids be with me most of the time, they are going to be gone for most days, most of the day in just 5 weeks.

This will be quite a change from what we are all used to. A singleton mom friend of mine was mentioning to me that it would be pretty quiet at my house come school-time. At least she has her son's younger brother still at home. For us triplet moms we have to have them all leave at once. It just doesn't seem fair.

Any suggestions on how to handle this transition. I'm thinking I have a few projects at home that will keep me busy, but also thinking maybe I should do something for me to ease the change. Maybe I'll take up the guitar if I can find a good teacher, or start on their baby books, or just hang out on the computer more.

Of course, I'm sure school will keep me pretty busy too. I hope I don't sound too whiney, but the reality of it is all starting to sink in. Guess I better go enjoy the rest of their summer.

Oh - I feel your pain! I had a very hard time with my guys going off - and I work PT! The first day, plan something nice for yourself - get together with a friend, get a manicure - something to take up some time and remind you of how there are some pros to this transition. It really is wonderful and so great to see them grow and learn- but it is also a time of grieving a bit.

Good luck

I know what you mean. Last night I told my husband that I want to HS so that I don't hve to let them go! He told me I was crazy. We bought a few school supplies the other day, and I almost cried! I don't have any suggestions for you, but wanted to let you know you are not alone!

I have found that when my kids are not around (visiting family) I think I'll have nothing to do,and yet something always pops up. If you need a household schedule check out www.flylady.net. She will keep you busy for a portion of the day at least.

Also, a family friend has made it her mission to be up at her kids school. From what I understand she lives up at the school with her kids during the day. She will photo copy paperwork and volunteers her time for projects. She and the teachers love this arrangement.

What a great time to date your husband at lunch time. Ooh think of the fun and possibility.

I actually had 4 leave for all day kindergarten on the same day (triplets plus my singlton is just 8 months older). So I went from 4 to zero in minutes. When I hugged them all good bye, I was crying just a little. I had a couple sniffles on the drive home. Then I made a cup of tea, listened to NPR for a half hour, then went out and rode my horse.

End of story -- no more emotion! So you may be fine, with just a couple sniffles. Previous to kids, I worked in a library for 14 years, so I did remember and love the "quiet".

Once they started 1st grade, I decided to be a substitute teacher in their school. This was great. I'd see them any day I was subbing, and a few times subbed in their class. If you are really worried, and you're qualified, I'd think about signing up to be a sub. My kids love when I go to school with them!

Mine went to K last year and I kept busy volunteering in their classes. I was there twice a week for a few hours each morning and it was wonderful! I got to know all the students and really felt like it went a long way towards cementing my relationship with their teachers too!

Yea it is quiet and a long day. I volunteered at the school so much during first grade I even did a lil of paid recess. It was too much, this year for 2nd grade I'll have to find a balance. Ya gotta figure out how to be alone again. The day will go by and then gear up for after school with homework, activities, etc. There will be snow days, breaks and summer too. Oh, do Cmas shop right away in September in case it does snow early.

It was tough for me for the first few days...and then.......I really started to appreciate the quiet time. It amazed me to find out that it really only takes about 5 minutes to unload the dishwasher! Not the usual 20 minutes when the kids were home!

My "babies" are entering 6th grade and my oldest dd is a sophmore. Call me a bad mommy, but I am looking forward to the start of the school year! The house will stay clean--all day, I will have time again to bake, workout, read etc.

But come next June, I will be all excited for school to be out for the summer! LOL!

Mine are going into 4th grade this year but I still remember how it felt when they all went off to K for the first time. We had the flu go thru the house the 1st week of K so I had 1 or 2 home with me until the last day that week. I took all three in on friday but was too exhausted to go meet a friend for coffee so I came home and watched a baby story. Of couse it ended up being about a set of triplets, so I was very emotional that day. I guess it is pretty obvious I wouldn't recommend going that route for anyone!
I worked PT so I was able to volunter in the class rooms and I highly recommend that to anyone who can. I love getting to know the other kids and it helped me keep up on what was going on in school for each one of my kids. The 1st two years I even took turns having lunch with just one of them. The kids loved having mom sit next to them and their friends would all want to sit around us too.
Now that they are a bit older and I am working more, I do love the fact that I can get something done at home when they are in school, but I still get a bit emotional when I think about how fast they are growing up. My heart goes out to you. Go find something you really want to do just for you, you deserve it

i got a little tired of everyone asking me what i was going to do with all my extra time. i still had my youngest at home, but sending the girls off to kindergarten was a big change for all of us. i looked into some opportunities for part time jobs, and volunteer work. i also started wanted to get a dog really badly.

i found though that our days seemed to flip, all the errands i got done after my husband got home from work, and my excercise class, all got done during the day, then once the girls got home from school our evening were packed. in our area kindergarten is full day, and they had homework each night. then with dinner and an earlier bedtime, there was very little family time left.

people always wonder when it gets easier, but i think it just keeps changing. hang on, it's a wild ride!

Thanks everybody! I am slowly getting used to the idea of sending them off to school. With a backlog of almost 6 years, I will have plenty at home to keep me busy.
I have heard of FlyLady(?)...have a poster of her's that says you can do anything for 15 minutes except whine.....I'll try to put that idea to use as I conquer the mess that was once my office and will soon be a playroom (can't wait to reclaim my living room)

They really do grow up fast. In 2 weeks they will get on a school bus for the first time. I just hope I'm ready for it.

Well, they are at school now and already into their afternoon. Because of early dismissal, they started lunch at 10:30. I haven't gotten as much done as I planned today but there's always tomorrow. I did go get my fave pastry for b'fast after they left and have watched some TV. I really need to take a nap since I only slept about 2 hours last night. They had the open house from 5-7 yesterday and I was up just thinking about it all.

Hope everyone's year is off to a great start,
